Todd Asks Starr To Eavesdrop On Blair And Max

Starr is in her bedroom at the Buchanan mansion playing with her dolls -- one is a girl doll with blonde hair and the other is a tall guy doll with dark hair.

Starr: (talking to the girl doll) Now, see, you're very, very beautiful and you have all the power. (speaking as the girl doll to the guy doll) "I have all the power! I have all the power!" (using the girl doll to hit the guy doll repeatedly) Revenge! Revenge!

Todd enters the room; of course, he approves of her game.

Todd: Oh, way to go, Starr.
Starr: Daddy!
Todd: (sits next to Starr) Hey, whatcha doing? You beating up the bad guy, huh?
Starr: (handing him the guy doll) This is Uncle Max.
Todd: Oh, that sounds fun.

Todd begins hitting the Max doll against the toy chest.

Starr: Except Mommy doesn't want to play anymore.
Todd: No? Since when?
Starr: She said she doesn't want to do revenge on Uncle Max. She told me to forget it, but I don't want to. I hope Uncle Max gets mad. Then me and Mommy can come live with you.
Todd: Oh, I'm sure that Uncle Max will be plenty mad.
Starr: That's not what Mommy says.
Todd: Well, your mother doesn't know anything. I mean, I'm the one who knows all about this stuff.

Suddenly, Blair enters the room.

Blair: Yeah, well you know what? Don't count on it. What are you doing here, Todd?
Todd: I need some dirt on Ben Davidson.
Blair: Ben? What makes you think I know anything about Ben? Why don't you just leave him alone, anyway?
Todd: What are you so touchy about? Did I hit a nerve? What is it you're hiding about Ben Davidson?

--end scene--

Todd: Starr? Why don't you go play with your computer?
Starr: Okay.

Starr leaves the room, and once she's gone Blair turns back to Todd.

Blair: All right, Todd, I'm waiting.
Todd: Are you sleeping with him?
Blair: Ben? No, I'm not sleeping with Ben.
Todd: I could've used that. Something's going on, though. Something big, though, because you went a little bonkers when I mentioned him just now.
Blair: I did not go bonkers!
Todd: Something's going on with Ben and I'm going to find out what it is.

Suddenly Max comes into the room.

Max: Time to say bye-bye, Todd. (to Blair) You okay?
Blair: Yeah, I'm fine. Just a little friendly visit with Todd.
Max: (to Todd) Well, if you will excuse us, I'd like to speak with my wife.
Todd: Like I care.
Blair: (glaring at Todd) Like I want you out of here.

Blair and Max leave the room and Todd sits back down at the foot of the bed. He picks up the Max doll and beats it repeatedly against the toy chest. Just then, Starr comes back in, carrying her computer. She sits next to her dad.

Todd: You know what I think, Starr? I think that they know something about my old pal Ben.

--end scene--

Todd: The more I think about it, the more I'm sure. You know, Max and Blair, they know something about Ben Davidson.
Starr: (still playing, speaking as the girl doll) "You're my prisoner, Max and you will regret it."
Todd: See, I like this game.
Starr: (speaking as the girl doll) "He'll never get away now."
Todd: Okay. Listen, you want to play a grown-up game?
Starr: (gesturing to the dolls) Is it like this?
Todd: Well -- do you know what eavesdropping is?

--end scene--

Todd: See, eavesdropping is when you listen to what other people are saying.
Starr: (smiling) Spying. I love that.
Todd: Right.
Starr: Is this part of Mommy's revenge?
Todd: Okay, well, it's all about revenge, but this has to be just our game, okay?
Starr: How do you play it?
Todd: Okay, well, you listen to everything that Max and Blair say, but you don't let them know that you're there.
Starr: And then I come tell you, right?
Todd: Exactly, exactly. But this really needs to be you know, just between you and me. You can't tell anybody, not even Blair.
Starr: I love secrets!
Todd: (looking at Starr intently) You are your mother's daughter.
Starr: But Mommy and Uncle Max talk too much. What if I can't remember it all?
Todd: Well, you don't got to listen to everything they say. You just got to pay attention to the parts that they talk about Ben.
Starr: Ben?
Todd: Yeah.
Starr: Your old pal?
Todd: My old pal Ben. Pay careful attention to what they say about Ben and about Max.
Starr: (smiling and nodding) Okay.

--end scene--

Meanwhile, downstairs, Blair and Max are in the library and Blair is trying to do damage control.

Blair: You know, Max, I have no idea why Todd is asking about Ben.
Max: Okay, I believe you.

But he still seems upset -- the larger issue here is Todd, not Ben.

Blair: Look, what am I supposed to do? He's her daddy. She absolutely adores him. And he does have a right to see her.
Max: That doesn't give him the right to wander in here any time he feels like it. I want him gone!

Todd, who has since come downstairs, pokes his head in the living room.

Todd: Fine. You want me gone, I'm gone. I'll see you later, Max.

He leaves the living room. Starr is also downstairs now -- Todd motions for her to hide near the living room door, and she does so. As Todd leaves, Starr prepares to secretly listen in on whatever Max and Blair are about to say next...

--end scene--

When the scene returns, Blair and Max have resumed their conversation, and Starr is still eavesdropping in the foyer.

Max: I don't like Todd poking around about Ben.
Blair: Oh, Max, come on. You're just making way too much of this.
Max: Todd hates my guts. Do you want him to find out the truth?
Blair: Well, of course not! But you know what, if you don't relax, he's going to get suspicious. Trust me, there's absolutely no way that Todd is going to find out who Ben Davidson really is.
Max: You better be right.

Starr smirks.
