Todd Asks Nora To Be His Lawyer

Nora is in her office reviewing some papers -- she's so engrossed in what she's doing that she doesn't hear Todd come into the office and doesn't even notice him until he's standing right behind her. When she finally does notice him, she quickly backs away.

Nora: What do you want??
Todd: Fine, thanks. You?

Nora continues backing away, all the way to her desk.

Nora: What do you want??
Todd: All right, look. (sighs) I know that I'm probably the last person that you want to hear this from, but I need a lawyer.

Nora immediately grabs the phone and is about to call for security.

Todd: Just give me five minutes --
Nora: I don't have five seconds for you!
Todd: Well, what about for the son of Victor Lord?
Nora: What, oh, and that would be you?
Todd: That would be me.
Nora: Well, nice to meet you, Mr. Lord. I'm Mother Theresa.
Todd: Look, if you don't believe me, ask your friend Viki. Or ask Tina Roberts, my sister. She's the one who told me about this jolly family secret.
Nora: I don't have time for your games.
Todd: Look, I'm telling you the truth. Come on, I couldn't possibly make this up.
Nora: You want me to believe that Victor Lord and Irene Manning were --

Nora suddenly breaks off as she realizes, in saying Irene's last name, how possible it is. She lamely finishes her sentence.

Nora: -- your parents.
Todd: That's what they're saying. I'm the one that David Vickers was pretending to be.
Nora: My God.
Todd: And I think that there's money involved. I mean, that's gotta be what Vickers was after, right?
Nora: And now you want it.
Todd: Yeah. But I need a lawyer.
Nora: Yes. Yes, you certainly do. But you're not gonna find one here, so why don't you just get out?

Nora points to the door.

--end scene--

Todd: I didn't expect you to be glad to see me.
Nora: But you needed a lawyer, so you figured, "What the heck?"
Todd: Look, I was hoping that you might have changed the way that you felt about me. (he pauses awkardly) Because of...what happened with Powell and all that.

Here, Todd pauses, but Nora just keeps glaring at him.

Todd: Come on, you were there. The guy was gonna blow my brains out. And I've thought about that. And I -- I've owned up to -- you know. Look, it was really my fault. I'm the reason that he totally flipped out. You don't think that I hate what I did? That I'm -- that I'm sorry?

Nora steps closer to Todd.

Nora: For one night, you might actually have acted human. But there are some things that I will never forget.
Todd: Look, if I could take it all back, I would. And all that stuff that I put you through at that house by the beach. I'm sorry.
Nora: Yeah.

Nora walks back toward her desk.

Nora: No matter how sorry you may be, Todd, the bottom line is I can never help you squeeze money out of anyone, let alone Viki and her family.
Todd: I don't want her money. All I want is what's due me, what's mine. That's all. I don't want anything to do with this "Lord dynasty." And this -- this Victor Lord guy, from what I hear, was pretty twisted anyway. Gotta, uh, gotta admit, it gives me an excuse for being the kind of guy I am, right? I got the Lord bloodline, Peter Manning as a dad -- that's a tough combination.
Nora: Well, there's the Todd Manning that I know! Blaming everything else -- including genetics! -- for his own sins, you know? But you're lucky, 'cause most people only have one father to blame.
Todd: I'm not trying to pin this garbage on anybody. You're wrong. All right, look, maybe I had a rotten childhood. That doesn't mean that it has to be the same for my kid.
Nora: For your what?
Todd: That's right. Blair is pregnant...and I'm the father. But I'll tell you something, that kid is gonna know that he is wanted and that he is loved from the first day that he's born. He is going to get everything that I didn't. You can count on that.

--end scene--

Nora paces the room while she digests the information that T&B are having a child.

Nora: I know Blair Daimler likes to live on the edge. But a baby? With you?
Todd: Things happen.
Nora: Mazel tov?
Todd: Whatever.
Nora: Well, that still doesn't explain why you're here. For God's sake, Todd, we've never really made a very good team. The last time I represented you, I handed you a mistrial. After which, you vowed to -- you tried to take revenge on me.
Todd: Now --
Nora: I know -- for which you're very sorry. But let's face it, Todd...that will live with me for a very long time.
Todd: I know. And that's why I'm here. I -- I started thinking about a lawyer, and then I started thinking about you, and I decided to come here. It's been on my mind a lot, you know?
Nora: I could never fathom what was on your mind, Todd.
Todd: Well, what you did...causing a mistrial and everything, I mean...you were right.

Nora is shocked.

Todd: We were guilty. And we were lying to you. And you did the right thing. I wasn't glad about it then --
Nora: (skeptically) But you are now?
Todd: Look, back then, I didn't mind living with lies. I mean, that was my whole life. But now, I can't live like that anymore. Man, I can't stomach it. So, yeah...I am glad. I mean, it got me to change. I mean, it took a long time, but...I did change.
Nora: You changed?
Todd: I'm gonna do what's right. This kid, he's gonna get everything that he deserves.

Nora sits down at her desk.

Nora: And, uh -- and you think that the money that David Vickers was after is gonna help you to do that, huh?
Todd: Well, it's a start. Okay, it may not be much, but it's mine, and I want it. I want it for the kid. And for me. 'Cause maybe I can find something good that can come out of all of this stuff that happened.
Nora: I would hope so.
Todd: Does this mean that you'll help me?

--end scene--

Nora gets up out of her chair.

Nora: I'm sorry, Todd, but the answer is no. I could give you a million reasons --
Todd: Don't bother.
Nora: The bottom line is I don't trust myself to do my best work for you.
Todd: Let's just forget this.

Todd turns to leave.

Nora: No, no, no, wait, wait. (seeing that Todd is continuing toward the door) I said, wait!

Nora goes to the desk and starts writing something down on a notepad.

Nora: (muttering) I certainly don't know why I'm doing this.

She finishes writing and hands the paper to Todd, who reads it.

Todd: Dan McCabe --
Nora: He's an estates and trusts lawyer.
Todd: Thank you.
Nora: I'm doing it for the kid, Todd. And for his or her sake, I hope you succeed.
Todd: Oh, I will. You can take that to the bank. I will.

Todd exits the office while Nora slowly sits down on one of the office chairs and contemplates what's just transpired.

--end scene--

When the scene returns, Nora is still sitting in the chair, lost in thought, when suddenly someone comes in and touches her shoulder from behind. She jumps up and whirls around, startled, but it's only Bo.

Bo: (putting his hands up in the air) Don't shoot! It's your fiance!
Nora: I didn't hear you come in.
Bo: No, I guess not. What are you thinkin' about?
Nora: I heard the most incredible thing today.
Bo: So did I!
Nora: What did you hear?
Bo: What? No, no, go -- you first.
Nora: No, no, no, go on, go on, go on, go on. Go on!
Bo: All right, all right! Cord was over at Asa's.
Nora: Uh-huh.
Bo: He tells us Todd Manning --
Nora: -- is Victor Lord's son.
Bo: Yes! (surprised) Is that your news?
Nora: Yes!
Bo: Where did you hear that??
Nora: From the heir himself!
Bo: Wait, he was here??
Nora: Yes, to see me!
Bo: I don't...like that.
Nora: Well, I didn't like it either, but he was actually quite well behaved.
Bo: Why did he come here to see you?
Nora: Well, Mr. Manning Lord found himself in need of legal advice.
Bo: He's got a lot of gall asking you for anything at all!
Nora: Yes, I know -- that's what I told him. But, you know, it was very interesting. He -- he talked about how he had changed and that he was very sorry for his sins.
Bo: Oh, he's "sorry"? Sorry is good. That's -- sorry's good. But it's going to take, like -- like, a lifetime of remorse for me, I mean, to ever turn me around on this guy.
Nora: There was just something about him, Bo.

Nora looks a little lost in thought again, and Bo looks at her skeptically.

Bo: Honey, listen, this guy has lied to people all his life.
Nora: I know, but there's one difference. This time, the liar is about to become a father.
Bo: A what?
Nora: (nodding) Mm. Blair -- Blair Daimler and he and baby makes three.
Bo: You've gotta be kidding.
Nora: (shaking her head) Mm-mm.
Bo: Does Cord know about this?
Nora: He will soon enough.
Bo: That's really -- that's a -- that's a strange combination to be raising a kid.
Nora: I know...I know. But he seems so serious about being a good father.
Bo: Well, he's gonna be a rich one...that's for sure. Not that that's gonna make any difference at all.
Nora: It's so hard to think of him as anything other than a near sociopath.
Bo: Honey, for that baby's sake, I hope you're wrong.
