T&B Discuss Their Financial Situation At Rodi's

Todd arrives at Rodi's and heads straight to the bar, where Sam Vance is also sitting; she's been waiting for him at Rodi's in the hopes that he'll hire her to find out why David Vickers wanted her to investigate him.

Sam Vance: Hey, I heard you left town.
Todd: Just what I need. (grabbing some bar chips to snack on) I came back. Who's your pigeon this time?
Sam Vance: Nobody.
Todd: Yeah, right.
Sam Vance: Hey, listen, I know we got off on the wrong foot --
Todd: Oh, really? I didn't notice.
Sam Vance: Can't I do something to change that?
Todd: Yeah -- find yourself another bar.
Sam Vance: Hey, I was just doin' my job.
Todd: (turning his back to Sam) Yeah, right -- some job. Digging up dirty laundry.
Sam Vance: Look, I'm a private investigator. David Vickers hired me to find out a few things about you -- end of story. Except I kinda got to like you.
Todd: (shooting her a skeptical look) Come on.
Sam Vance: No, I did.
Todd: You like me?
Sam Vance: Yeah, I do.
Todd: Then buzz off. (getting up and moving to a table) Can't you see I'm here celebrating my marriage?
Sam Vance: (shocked) Excuse me?
Todd: You heard me. (calling over to the bar) Jonesy, could I get a beer, please?
Jonesy: Comin' right up.

Sam quickly follows Todd over to his table and takes a seat there next to him.

Sam Vance: Who'd you marry?
Todd: None of your business. Why don't you go dig up dirt on someone else?
Sam Vance: Look, just give me five minutes.
Todd: You're joking, right?
Sam Vance: I've got a proposition for you -- one I think you're gonna like.

As the waitress brings Todd his beer, Todd gives Sam another skeptical look.

--end scene--

Sam Vance: Aren't you curious why David is digging into your private life? Why don't you let me find out for you?
Todd: (getting close to Sam's face and glaring at her) Yeah, right. Like you don't already know.
Sam Vance: I don't know.
Todd: Get serious.
Sam Vance: I am serious. David didn't tell me why he wanted the answers, and I wasn't paid to ask. But I could be now. I'm very good at what I do. Hire me to find out what David was after, and I guarantee you'll wind up knowing. So...interested?

--end scene--

Todd: I don't need you. I've already figured out why David Vickers was after me.
Sam Vance: Oh, yeah?
Todd: Yeah, it has something to do with my birth parents.
Sam Vance: Oh, come on. That's a little vague, don't you think?
Todd: Peter Manning died -- they must have found out and tried to track me down.
Sam Vance: But why? Why send David Vickers?
Todd: Who cares?

Todd takes another sip of beer and Sam, seeing that he is losing interest by the second, tries to make her hinting a little more specific.

Sam Vance: Look, people only hire PIs like me for two reasons -- sex or money.
Todd: (amused) Yeah, well, then it must be sex, 'cause my wallet's not exactly bulging. Not that my sex life is all that interesting, either.
Sam Vance: You're not having an affair with a married woman, are you? Hey, it's a major source of my income.
Todd: Get real.
Sam Vance: All right, well then it must be money.
Todd: Dream on.
Sam Vance: Maybe it doesn't have anything to do with money, but David must think money is involved somehow. Why don't you let me find out?
Todd: Thanks, but no thanks.
Sam Vance: Listen, don't rush -- think it over.
Todd: No, I already have, and I've already decided that I don't want to dig up old family secrets.
Sam Vance: (handing Todd her card) If you change your mind, call me.
Todd: (reading the card) "Sam Vance: Private Investigator." This is your real card, I guess.
Sam Vance: Yeah, well, why pass up a shot at what could lead to some real money?
Todd: You're dreamin'.
Sam Vance: (getting up from the table) Maybe. Maybe not. Let me know.

As Sam heads out of Rodi's she passes by Blair, who has just arrived. The two women exchange a quick look before Sam exits and Blair sits down at Todd's table.

Todd: You okay?
Blair: Yeah.
Todd: So how'd it go with the white knight? Did you tell Cord about our baby?
Blair: It's none of his business. Nothing in my life is.
Todd: Blair, I'm not an idiot. I know you can't get Cord outta your mind. And now that Cord's here, I know you must be thinking that this is just a great big mistake, aren't you?

Blair looks at Todd but doesn't say anything.

--end scene--

Blair moves closer to Todd and seeks to reassure him.

Blair: You're wrong, Todd. (putting her hand on his arm) I'm -- I'm not sorry that I married you.
Todd: (skeptically) Yeah?
Blair: Yes. In fact, I'm very grateful that you decided to marry me and to help me raise our child. My life is just at a strange place, that's all.
Todd: You telling me.
Blair: It's like it's on fast-forward. I -- first, I was with Max, and that ended, and then I fell in love with Cord, and that ended.
Todd: (raising an eyebrow) You sure about that?
Blair: (firmly) Definitely.
Todd: So, what? I'm just -- stuck in the middle somewhere, huh?
Blair: Yeah. And then -- I get pregnant.
Todd: That's the last thing I need.
Blair: Suddenly, I'm married and... (sighing) The only thing that hasn't changed in my life is -- is Melador.
Todd: Oh, yeah, right -- your dream.

As Todd says this, the waitress brings his bill by and sets it on the table.

Blair: My very real dream, my very real company. It's the one constant in my life. I just gotta find the money to make it happen, that's all.
Todd: Yeah, well, I don't know from where. Unless your aunt Dorian shows up and you can wheedle more cash out of her.
Blair: Yeah.
Todd: Me, I'm just hoping I can get my job back -- my swell position as the locker room attendant at the country club -- so I can make ends meet. (picking up his bill with a sigh) 'Cause I sure am running on empty now.

--end scene--

Todd puts some money on the table to pay for his drinks.

Todd: Yeah, well, I'd better head out to the country club and beg for my old job back.

Blair spots Sam Vance's business card on the table. She studies it with interest.

Blair: Wait a minute -- what are you doing with this?
Todd: Oh, Ms. Marple was poking around again.
Blair: Yeah, I saw her when I -- when I came in. What's up?
Todd: She told me her gun is for hire if I wanna find out why David Vickers hired her to snoop around about me.
Blair: You mean she didn't know?
Todd: That's what she says. Apparently there was money involved, though.
Blair: What did you tell her?
Todd: I told her to take a hike. (he takes the card back from Blair and slips it in his pocket)
Blair: Well, wait a minute now, Todd. You might be just a little hasty here.
Todd: Why? What am I going to pay her with -- free tennis lessons?
Blair: Well, what if there is money involved?
Todd: I'm sure there isn't.
Blair: Ah, you don't know that for sure. I mean, why don't you just have her check it out? It won't cost you anything. I mean, what have you got to lose, Todd?
Todd: Come on, Blair. Look at my life so far. There isn't any money.
Blair: Yeah. Well, wouldn't it be wild if there were?

Todd downs the rest of his beer and considers what she's said.

--end scene--

Blair: Let this Sam Vance woman help you out.
Todd: Come on, Blair. When was the last time you saw me asking anybody for help?
Blair: Oh, let me see. Maybe -- I don't believe you objected to the time that I found you bleeding to death in your motel, and I saved you there. And then there was that time that I did -- I think you asked me to sneak you out of that hospital bed.
Todd: Yeah, but I needed something those times. And I don't need anything from this Sam Vance chick.
Blair: All right, maybe not. But, look, she does have a point. When people do hire private eyes, it's usually for sex and money.
Todd: Yeah? So what?
Blair: Todd, what have you got to lose by having -- finding out why David Vickers hired her to check you out? There could be money involved.
Todd: Look, I don't trust this Sam Vance chick. She's done nothing but hand me bull ever since I met her.
Blair: She is a private eye! That's her job.
Todd: No, I don't want anything to do with it. David Vickers is a liar. This is nothing but another one of his scams. There ain't no money in this for me. So let's just drop it, okay?

--end scene--

Blair: What harm is there in letting Sam Vance check out why and what David Vickers wanted from you?
Todd: You're just not going to give up on this, are you?
Blair: Because I don't want you to miss out on money that could be yours.
Todd: All right, fine, all right.
Blair: (excited) So you'll let Sam Vance help you?
Todd: I'll think about it, just to get you off my back.
Blair: Oh, come on, Todd. Don't tell me that you don't hope that there's some big bucks out there for you.
Todd: I'm not going to count on it, but -- we do have a baby on the way, and I guess I could use the cash.

Suddenly, Todd remembers his job hunt.

Todd: Oh, which reminds me, I've gotta go back to the country club now and beg for my job back.
Blair: I think that's a good idea.
Todd: (chuckling wryly) Yeah, right. Like picking up the floor of the locker room is what you would pick in a husband. But I'm not a free-loader.
Blair: Todd, we're married now. Whatever is mine is yours and vice versa, right? (she puts her hand on his arm)
Todd: Yeah, well, thanks but no thanks. I'm gonna find a place to work. So you wanna ride down to the country club with me? (he downs the rest of his drink)
Blair: Um, no, actually, I'm a little tired. They say that this usually goes away after the first three months.
Todd: Don't sweat it.
Blair: Okay, see you.

Todd stands up and is about to leave, but he casts one last look at Blair, who smiles at him somewhat awkwardly.

Todd: See you.

Then Todd bends down and tenderly kisses her. As he does, Max and Luna walk in, and Luna reacts with open-mouthed disgust at seeing two of her least favorite people in a lip-lock.

--end scene--

Todd and Blair part from their kiss.

Todd: (softly) So, feel better, huh?
Blair: Thanks.
Todd: See you at your place.

Todd turns and brushes past Max and Luna as he leaves the bar. But Luna can't get over what she's just witnessed.

Luna: They make quite a pair, don't they?
Max: They certainly deserve each other. Listen, maybe we oughta give Cord a call, have him meet us somewhere else. There's no point in putting him through this.
Luna: No, I think that's a good idea, honey. I'm going to go try to catch him.

Luna leaves to go find a phone, which leaves Max free to wander over to Blair's table. Of course, Blair is none too happy to see him.

Blair: Don't even bother saying it, Max, 'cause I don't want to hear it.
Max: Well, I gotta admit, Blair, you're really scraping the bottom of the barrel when it comes to bunk-mates these days, aren't you?

Blair stands up and stares him down.

Blair: Well, for your information --
Max: Hmm?
Blair: (holding up her hand) Todd is my husband.
Max: What?
Blair: (proudly) That's right, Max. I am Mrs. Todd Manning.
Max: (laughing) You're really something, you know that? You change men faster than a speeding bullet. Who's going to be next?
Blair: You know, I don't have to take this from you --

Blair tries to brush past him, but he stops her.

Max: No, no, no --
Blair: What? What??
Max: Wait, wait, there's something else here. Something I don't understand. You know, you dumped me for Asa. That's 'cause you were after his millions. Now, in your own sick little mind, I can kind of understand your twisted --
Blair: You know, shut up -- shut up, Max, shut up!
Max: Dumping Cord for Todd Manning? A penniless ex-con who's busy scraping together enough money picking up towels at the local club? Blair, I am so disappointed in you. Why, you're losing your touch as the queen of the gold-diggers!

Blair hauls off and slaps Max. Afterward, he just glares at her as she stares defiantly back at him.

--end scene--

Max: You know, I never thought I would say this, Blair, but I actually feel sorry for Todd Manning.

Max brushes past Blair and joins Luna. At that moment, Cord comes in. Blair and Cord exchange an awkward look, and Blair quickly leaves the bar.
