Blair Tells Todd That She's Pregnant

Location: Key West. It's nighttime on the beach, and Todd is sitting alone on a log near a small fire. We can see Blair approaching from behind him, but he's so lost in his thoughts that he doesn't realize she's there until she taps his shoulder and he jumps in surprise.

Blair: Oh, Todd, I'm sorry! It's just me, Blair!

Todd stares at her like he can't believe she's real.

Todd: Blair. What are you doing here?
Blair: Well, I -- I checked all the local bars and motels on the island and -- then I saw it: a bed and breakfast named Sarah's.

Blair sits down on the log, cheerfully making herself right at home. But Todd remains standing in disbelief.

Blair: And I knew that that is where you had checked in, because it reminded you of the best part of your life that you left behind. You know, I know how much those kids mean to you --
Todd: Cut the analysis, all right? Come on, Blair...

Todd squats down so he's looking in her in the eye.

Todd: Tell me. Why'd you follow me all the way to Key West?

When the scene returns, Todd is sitting next to Blair on the log.

Blair: I was kind of hurt when you didn't call or anything before you left.
Todd: (glumly) I told you I was going.
Blair: Yeah, but a face-to-face goodbye, Todd, would have been nice.
Todd: Is that why you followed me down here? Oh, what, you needed that five bucks I borrowed that bad?
Blair: No, I...

Blair decides to change the subject.

Blair: So -- how do you like it down here?
Todd: It's all right down here. Best part is, is I don't know anybody and nobody knows anything about me. I got enough cash for a room for a month. I start looking for a job tomorrow. So, tell me...
Blair: Hmm?
Todd: What is it you're really here about?
Blair: Uh, I just, um, well, I came -- I came all the way down here -- because there's something I gotta tell you.
Todd: You know, it's real up-to-date down here, we got telephones and everything.
Blair: Well, I know that, Todd...

Blair jumps up from the log and paces nervously.

Blair: I just wanted to tell you in person, that's all.
Todd: ...Why does that make me nervous?
Blair: Because it makes me nervous, all right? I just -- I thought that this was going to be easier, but face-to-face...
Todd: Come on, Blair. Tell me.

But Blair stays silent.

Todd: (emphatically) Tell me!

--end scene--

Blair: You know that early Christmas present?
Todd: (sarcastic) Oh, gee, no, I forgot, Blair. What kind of question is that??
Blair: Well, come on, Todd, this isn't easy for me to talk about, you know?

Now Todd gets to his feet.

Todd: Look, Blair, I'm not good at this, either -- this talking about things stuff. I -- yeah, I remember. It was a nice present.
Blair: (quickly) No, it was not a nice present. It was -- it was a dumb, reckless present.
Todd: (taken aback) Okay...
Blair: Look, I don't mean it that way! It's just -- Todd, we just weren't careful, that's all. About anything. We -- we weren't thinking ahead and -- we didn't use any protection.
Todd: If you're saying you got some kind of a disease, I'll tell you right now, you didn't get it from me!
Blair: No, Todd, I'm not saying that, and would you stop jumping to conclusions here?

Blair looks down uncomfortably and Todd catches her meaning.

Todd: There's only one other conclusion to jump to, Blair.
Blair: I'm pregnant.

--end scene--

Todd: You know this for a fact?
Blair: Well, I -- I took all these home pregnancy tests, and then I went to my doctor a couple of days ago and, well -- he confirmed it!

Todd turns away from Blair in exasperation.

Todd: What makes you think that this is my -- that I'm the --

But Todd can't finish the sentence. He turns back around to face Blair.

Todd: Why is this my problem? You were seeing Cord the same time.
Blair: Cord and I were always very careful.
Todd: Quit talking about it like that! Like we were drunk driving or something!
Blair: Well, we were in a way. (she looks away)
Todd: (quietly) I thought it was a gift. I guess Santa's got a real sick sense of humor when it comes to after Christmas.
Blair: Look, Todd, all I am telling you is that there is no doubt in my mind that this -- well, it's your baby.
Todd: This is not a "baby." Not yet.

Todd goes to sit back down on the log.

Todd: So what are you gonna do?
Blair: Well, I'm assuming that you don't want this child.
Todd: Will you quit talking about it like it's already a kid?
Blair: I'm sorry. I'm assuming that you don't want anything to do with -- this -- that you want me to have an abortion.
Todd: Well, that is what you're planning to do, right?

Blair looks away from Todd before she answers.

--end scene--

Blair: You know, I always thought if this ever happened to me, there'd be no doubt in mind -- I'd have an abortion. I mean, being an accidental birth wasn't all that much fun, you know? But now I'm older and hopefully smarter. It just seems that the right thing now to do is -- is to have this child. Look, I want this child, Todd.

Blair sits down on the log next to him.

Blair: I want this child. I can't believe it, but I want this child to have a good life. The kind of life that I never had when I was little.
Todd: I can't even believe what I'm hearing.
Blair: Look, I know that -- your life wasn't that much fun growing up either. Todd, I want to give this child a good life. And in giving that child, would be like giving back to myself. You can understand that, can't you? Come on, Todd, you can! I mean, I thought you of all people would understand why I don't want to give up this baby.
Todd: (exasperated) Oh, what, because my father didn't want me, I'm supposed to think that it's a great idea to have this kid? Oh, yeah, that makes sense!
Blair: Todd, look, I'm not here to put any pressure on you.
Todd: (scoffs)
Blair: I'm not! Oh, man, this is coming out all wrong. I am not here to -- to ask you to be a part of this baby's future.
Todd: Then what are you asking me?
Blair: Nothing. I just thought that I would come down here and tell you face-to-face that I'm pregnant, but I'm -- I'm not gonna do it alone.
Todd: Then what?
Blair: Well, I'm gonna tell Cord the baby's his.

Todd stares at Blair while she looks away.

--end scene--

Blair: I'm sure when Cord finds out that I'm pregnant and that he's the father, he'll want to do the right thing.

Todd quickly stands up and walks away from Blair. He keeps his back turned toward her.

Todd: Thought you were over that guy. (suddenly shouting) I don't get it! You come all the way down here, you hunt me down like a bloodhound, you drop this bomb on me! Tell me that you're pregnant... (sarcastic laugh) And I'm the daddy! But you're gonna tell Cord that it's his. Well, why bother bringing me into this at all if that's what you were planning?

Blair stands up and walks over to Todd.

Blair: I felt that I owed you the truth and the choice in the matter, Todd. Look, no matter what we've done to the rest of the world, we've always been honest with each other. I mean, you're the one person -- actually, the only person I've ever met in my whole life that I felt that I didn't have to hide anything from. This is me. You know me. And you accept me. And that means more to me than you'll ever know.
Todd: Not necessarily.
Blair: I just -- I felt that I needed -- or I owed you the real story. But I'm going to ask just one favor, please.

Todd finally turns to face her.

Blair: Don't tell Cord the truth about the baby. Let him believe that he is the father. Will you do that?
Todd: Sounds to me like you've already got everything worked out for the both of us. So you go ahead, Blair. You do what you have to do.

Todd turns and leaves the beach. Once he's gone, Blair sighs nervously.

Blair: Oh, I just rolled the dice on 27.8 million dollars! Oh, God, I hope it works!
