Todd Proposes To Blair And They Leave For Key West

Blair enters Rodi's and spots Todd sitting alone at a table. She walks over to him.

Blair: Hey. I was hoping that I'd find you here.
Todd: Where else would I be?
Blair: Well, we -- things kind of were left up in the air. I thought -- well, I figured you'd be back in Key West by now.
Todd: Don't worry. I will be soon. That is what you want, isn't it, Blair?

Blair stays silent so Todd prompts her again.

Todd: Isn't it, Blair?
Blair: No. No, Todd, that's not what I want at all.

Todd: I don't know what you want from me.

Blair sits down at the table with Todd.

Blair: Well, if it were my choice, I would want you to stay right here in Llanview and help raise our child. But I know that that's not what you want.
Todd: (carefully) What is it that you think I want?
Blair: Todd, I have no idea what you want. You obviously don't want me to give this child away to anyone else. And you don't want me to have Cord raise it as his. But you also know that I am not going to raise this child alone. So what am I supposed to do? What are my options here?

Todd stares at Blair and says nothing.

Blair: Unless -- you want to marry me and be this child's father.

Todd continues staring at Blair intently.

When the scene returns, Todd has tried to leave and Blair has grabbed his arm. There's a moment of awkward tension between them.

The radio at Rodi's is tuned in to Luna's radio show, which is playing The Marvelettes' "Please Mr. Postman" as Todd and Blair stare each other down.

Todd: Well, are you planning on saying something?
Blair: I'm sorry that -- that I pushed you and that I scared you.
Todd: Look, this baby's a lot to take in.
Blair: For me, too.
Todd: You know, Cord's not such a bad guy. It doesn't seem right making him think that it's his kid.
Blair: Well, I'm not ready to raise up this child alone. I've done everything else in my life like that. Not this time. A baby needs two parents. I believe that. It's what I need, and it's what I want. The question here, Todd, is what do you want?
Todd: Look, it's tough enough just taking care of myself. Someone else -- having to be there? I don't think I could do that.

Blair's grown tired of this. She grabs her coat and purse and prepares to leave.

Blair: Well, I'll do what I gotta do, then.

But before she goes, Todd stops her.

Todd: Hey, Blair --
Blair: Look, Todd. (she gestures to her belly) This is my problem now. You don't have to worry about it, all right?
Todd: Just wait one minute, okay? One minute, please.

--end scene--

Blair: Look, Todd, I -- I really don't want to argue with you about this.
Todd: I'm not looking to argue.
Blair: What do you want? What do you want me to do?
Todd: What do you want me to do?
Blair: The only thing that I feel that I have the right to ask you, I would ask any friend. Just don't give me away to Cord when I tell him that it's his child. Would you do -- would you do that for me, Todd, please? Please?
Todd: I don't want you to marry him.
Blair: (surprised) What?
Todd: I don't want you to marry Cord. That's my kid.
Blair: (putting a hand to her stomach) It's our kid.
Todd: Whatever. Look, maybe we oughta get married. People do that, right? Friends having a baby?
Blair: Yeah, well -- you want to marry me? I mean, you're sure? You really want to marry me?
Todd: Yeah, I mean if you...? Yeah, okay. Would you marry me?

Blair is stunned into speechlessness.

--end scene--

As the song on the radio changes over to Otis Redding's "Try a Little Tenderness," Todd is still waiting for Blair's response to his proposal.

Todd: Well, you can answer me anytime. I'm not busy.
Blair: (gesturing to the table) Have a seat.

They both sit back down.

Blair: Yes.
Todd: Yes?
Blair: (laughing) Yes, I'll marry you!
Todd: Okay. Good.
Blair: Todd, thank you. Thank you so much for -- for being a friend. And for allowing me to -- to have this baby.
Todd: All right. I mean, you know, you're not that bad. And I guess having a kid around won't be that bad either.
Blair: I'll make you happy! I'll -- I'll try.
Todd: Yeah, good luck.
Blair: You can always count on me. Always. Really. I mean that. Look, Todd, I know that -- I know that you don't love me. You don't love me anymore than -- well, than I love you, right?

The mood turns a little uncomfortable at this reminder that Blair chose to continue chasing Cord even after she slept with Todd.

Todd: What's your point?
Blair: I do care about you though.
Todd: Well, I guess that makes me a lucky guy. So, where do you go around here to get married on short notice?
Blair: Well, you know what we can do? We can go back down to Florida and get married down there! What do you say? Let's do it!
Todd: What, Key West?
Blair: Yeah!
Todd: What, on the spur of the moment? Yeah, I guess that could be a kick. Sure, why not?
Blair: Great! I'll tell you what, I'll go home, pack a few things, and I'll meet you at the airport in, say, thirty minutes?
Todd: All right -- it's done.
Blair: Great!

They both stand up.

Blair: So, um, I'll -- I'll be there.
Todd: Yeah, I'll -- I'll be there, too, I guess.
Blair: Okay.
Todd: See you.

Todd turns and leaves.

Blair: (shouting after him) Half hour!

Now alone, Blair looks like she's about to burst with happy excitement. However, just as she turns to exit, she spots Cord, who has just arrived at the bar. The two stare at each other.

Cord approaches Blair, who is reluctant to talk with him. The song on the radio is now B.B. King's "The Thrill is Gone."

Cord: Look, I've thought about this -- I thought about you all the way back home from Spain.
Blair: Oh, excuse me for being so rude. How was Spain? And how was Tina?
Cord: I found Tina, and I brought my kids back home. And, yes, Tina came, too.
Blair: That's just really great. So you brought the whole happy family back. Congratulations. Look, I'd hate -- I'd love to stay here, but I've got to go catch a plane -- I'm going down to Miami.
Cord: Wait, why are you going back down there? I thought you sold your business down there.
Blair: Whatever I do, wherever I go, whoever I choose to be with or not, is none of your business. Just like that little trip down to Spain was none of my business, and I didn't ask you any questions.
Cord: You did, and the questions you asked just got the wrong answers -- that's all.
Blair: Right, well, you think about that. Better yet, why don't you just talk 'em over with Tina?
Cord: Ugh!

Blair stalks toward the exit as Cord, frustrated, heads to the bar's pay-phone. Just as Blair is about to leave, she turns around and looks at Cord, who is getting ready to place a call. Then she leaves. When Cord turns back around and calls her name, she's already left.
--end scene--

Later, at the airport, Todd is anxiously waiting by the gate, with the tickets in hand. Blair comes rushing up behind him.

Blair: Oh, Todd --
Todd: Hey, where you been? (nervous) Look, they just called our plane. I got two tickets. Come on, we're going now.
Blair: Look, Todd, it's just a last chance, if you want to -- if you want to back out.
Todd: No. Let's do it.
Blair: You sure?
Todd: Yeah. Look, this whole town, they all say that we deserve each other, right? What? You're not sure about this either, are you?
Blair: (shaking head) No.
Todd: Well, then, it's a perfect match. Look, come on, we'll -- we'll take the vows, we'll hit the beach. Key West, here we come.

Todd heads toward the gate, confident that Blair is following behind. He hands the tickets to the attendant and heads through the door. Blair nervously follows.

Blair: Okay, sounds good to me.

Blair heads through the door after Todd and the attendant closes it after them. Suddenly, Cord comes running over to the gate.

Cord: Uh, hi, excuse me --
Attendant: Sure.
Cord: I'm looking for someone. She's on your flight to Miami.
Attendant: Uh, yes, that would be gate 23.
Cord: Thank you!
Attendant: But sir, that flight's already pulling away. They just closed the gate. You're too late.

Cord looks crestfallen. And Todd and Blair are on their way to Key West....
