Todd Dreams of Warnings From Viki and Sam

Todd's not having a great night. Stressed about the wedding, he broke into Blair's suite at the Palace to rant about scheduling issues with St. James, and she booted him out on the grounds that it was, in fact, the middle of the night.

Now, he's made his way to Rae's house, where he beats furiously on her door.

Todd: Yo, Rae! Open up!

But there is no response. Todd looks around and waits a beat before knocking again.

Todd: Okay, fine, "Dr. Rae"! Come on! I gotta talk to you! (knocking) Come on! You can't leave me out here! I'm a patient! You took some kind of a oath! Open up! Come on! (knocking) Come on, lady! Open the damn door!

Todd then kicks in a window by the door so he can get his hand through to the lock. Then he opens the door and triumphantly strolls inside.

Todd: Ha ha! Keep me out?

He wanders around the darkened living room.

Todd: Come on, lady! Come here! Srink me! (yelling up the stairs) Come on! I'm not kidding around here! I'm serious! You got, like, two seconds to get down here and talk to me, or I'm going to kill somebody!

--end scene--

When the scene returns, Todd is still waiting by the darkened stairway, and now he's quieter and more defeated, realizing that Rae is not home.

Todd: Come on, lady. Can't you cure what ails me?

Suddenly, Todd hears Sam's voice from the other room.

Sam's Voice: What is your opinion, doctor?

Todd is shocked not only to hear Sam but to hear an answer from Viki, who speaks as if she were a psychiatrist.

Viki's Voice: I think, after careful and prolonged observation, I believe that his extreme anger stems from the abuse that he suffered as a child.

Todd wanders over toward the living room to try to find out where the voices are coming from. Viki continues talking in a very clinical fashion.

Viki's Voice: Witness the broken window, the yelling, the screaming. Notice that he used his adoptive father's lighter to set the fire in RJ's bar.

Viewers can now see what Todd does -- that he is hallucinating Viki and Sam sitting in armchairs in Rae's living room.

Viki: The very same lighter that his father used to torture him with.
Sam: Well, I think that's a great point. I would be inclined to agree. Although might I suggest that his problem goes deeper. Todd is a true sociopath.
Viki: We certainly know that it's not D.I.D. He faked his.
Sam: True, true.
Todd: What is this? Some kind of a joke?
Viki: What it is doesn't really matter. In therapy, what matters is how you feel. Do you -- do you feel that this is a joke?
Todd: (holding his head in his hand) I feel like I'm hallucinating, and I feel like you two are nuts.
Sam: Now, "nuts," that's -- that's not exactly an accurate term. It's not clinical talk, certainly.
Viki: How about "looney"?
Sam: Or "batty."
Viki: Or "demented," "deranged," "irrational," "mad"!
Todd: Enough. Go away, both of you. Get out of my head.
Sam: What? Not enough room up there for all of us, Todd?
Todd: No! I got real problems on my hands.
Viki: But that's why we're here -- to help you.
Sam: Yes, we know what your problem is.
Viki: It's Blair.
Todd: Brilliant. Great, brilliant. But why? Why -- why is Blair making me nuts?
Sam: "Nuts." There's that word again -- "nuts."
Viki: Actually, you already know the answer to that.
Todd: No, I don't. If I did, I wouldn't be here, and -- and you wouldn't be here either.
Sam: (chuckling) You know the answer to this. You're simply in denial.
Todd: No, I'm not!

Todd considers what he's just said.

Todd: Okay, if I were in denial, what would I be in denial about?
Viki: About the fact that Blair doesn't really love you -- the fact that she does not want to marry you.

Todd looks at Viki in shock.

--end scene--

Todd: You two are the ones who are crazy. If Blair didn't want to marry me, why did she say yes?
Viki: Now, that's a very, very interesting question. (to Sam) What do you think?
Sam: I think that Blair is afraid of Todd.
Todd: No -- if she was afraid, she would have taken off.
Viki: Well, she did try to do that, didn't she? And you had her arrested.
Todd: No, that's when she was returning, not -- not leaving. (breaking off lamely before continuing) Anyway, that -- that -- that was way before the engagement!
Viki: And what has happened since? You tried to fly her to Santo Domingo to get married -- she said no. You burst into her room tonight to try to set a wedding date -- she said no. It doesn't take a psychiatrist to figure out that Blair is having second thoughts.
Sam: I remember when Nora was having second thoughts. Now, it was very clear to me -- as clear as a bell, as plain as day.
Viki: Whereas Ben couldn't wait to get married. Nothing could have stopped him.
Todd: Blair is not having any thoughts!
Sam: Oh, my word! We're getting testy -- a little defensive here, Todd?
Viki: Yes, yes, yes -- not to mention desperate.
Sam: Mm.
Viki: Chartering airplanes, waking people up in the middle of the night, breaking and entering?
Todd: I'm not desperate. I'm just trying to get what I want.
Sam: You are clearly running scared.
Todd: Shut up, Sam!
Viki: You're terrified.
Todd: You shut up, too, Viki!
Sam: Terrified that Blair doesn't love you.
Todd: Shut up, the both of you!
Viki: Terrified that you were going to end up totally --
Sam: And absolutely --
Viki and Sam: Alone!
Todd: (yelling) Shut up! Just shut up, shut up -- (holding his head in his hands) Oh, shut up!

When Todd looks up, both of them have vanished.
