Todd Tells Viki and Sam That He and Blair Are Engaged
At Llanfair, Viki and Sam have just finished discussing Ben's recent kidnapping at the hands of some mysterious men. Sam has managed to calm Viki down, and she opens the front door for him on his way out, when both are surprised when Todd comes barreling through the doorway.
Todd: Okay, good, you're both here. All right, you're going to be the best man. You got three things you got to do -- you got to show up, you got to put a tux on, you got to keep your mouth shut, and don't mess up with the rings, all right? And, Viki, you -- well, you can give Blair away or something.
Sam: Wait a minute -- what are you babbling about?
Todd: Oh, I'm going to have a party that's going to blow this whole town away. That's right. That's right. (to Viki) My wedding is going to way, way, way totally kick your wedding's butt!
Viki and Sam look perplexed, to say the least.
--end scene--
Todd looks at Viki and Sam and waits for them to respond to his announcement, but they stay silent.
Todd: (trying again) I'm getting married!
Viki and Sam continue to stay quiet.
Todd: Okay. (mimicking them) "Congratulations!" (getting upset now) Hey! It's not like I walk in here with news like this every day!
Sam: It's your life, Todd. Keep it to yourself.
Todd: Somebody's in a bad mood. What about you, Viki? You gonna have a big bash?
Viki: I'm sorry -- this is not a good time, okay?
Todd: Hey, don't everybody jump up and down at once!
Sam: Excuse me. If you'd open your eyes for a second, you would see that you walked in in the middle of something.
Todd: What?
Todd looks back and forth between them and decides Sam means they were having sex.
Todd: (revolted) Oh, oh, oh! Well, thank God you both got your clothes back on!
Viki starts walking away in exasperation while Sam tries to lead Todd back toward the door.
Sam: That's it! Out of here, out of here, out of here! (opening the door for Todd) You know what? You can share your news with us some other time, provided it's not just wishful thinking.
Todd: What's that supposed to mean?
Sam: That's supposed to mean that the last time you and Blair were going to get married, Blair was the only one who didn't know about it.
Todd: It's a minor detail, which I fixed now. She -- she knows. It's all out in the open. She even answered! Believe me -- very soon, Blair and I are going to be so revoltingly happy, even a sap like you will be sick.
Sam gives Todd an "are you serious right now?" look which Todd returns with one of his own.
--end scene--
When the scene returns, Todd has somehow managed to get away from Sam at the door and is barreling into the library to talk to Viki.
Todd: So, are you going to run a big wedding story in The Banner?? I'm putting a front-page story in The Sun.
Viki: Todd, that's fine. You do whatever you want to. Todd, you have to leave me out of this, okay? I can't deal with it now.
Todd: What?? Leave you out of it? You're my sister!
Viki: Right now, all I care about is being Mrs. Ben Davidson, all right?
Todd: Wow! Wait a minute -- does Jessica know that you've just quit being her mother? That you've resigned --
The doorbell rings, and Viki goes to answer it.
Todd: Hey, hey, I'm talking to you!
Sam: Hey, hey! Is it too much to ask to take notice that your sister's going through something right now?
Todd: Do you think it's too much to ask for the people that -- that claim to care about me for a few kind words when I say that I'm getting married? Let's try this again, okay? "Congratulations, Todd! Uh, couldn't happen to a nicer guy, Todd!" No, it's always the same garbage with you guys! "Get -- get normal! Get a life!" If I do, then maybe I get to sit at the big-folks table! I come to you with nice, normal news, and you want nothing to do with it!
Sam: Tell you what. Here's some un-normal news. Ben was taken by thugs while Viki watched. We don't know where he is or why he was taken.
Todd is clearly shocked by this and manages only a slight nod as he processes what Sam has said. Meanwhile, Bo comes into the library with Viki.
Bo: Hey. (glaring at Todd, then addressing Viki) Tell me about Ben's phone call.
Viki: Well, I'll tell you, it was very odd, okay? I fell asleep on the sofa, and I had a dream, and in the dream I saw Ben walking into a living room that I had never seen before, and then I woke up and the phone rang, and it was Ben, and he said that he was standing in the living room that he had never seen before.
Bo: What did he say?
Viki: Well, he said he was fine -- they were treating him well. They didn't seem to want to hurt him. But, I mean, he might just have been trying to reassure me, you know?
Bo: How did he sound?
Viki: He sounded fine, you know? He sounded like himself. He said he was determined to find out who was behind it and then he was going to come home. The problem is, as soon as he said to me he thought he was about an hour outside of Llanview, somebody cut him off. So now I'm afraid for him all over again.
Bo: Viki, if they were going to do him any harm at all, they would have already done it. But instead they wanted you to know that he's alive and well.
Sam: That's very good news.
Viki: But what do they want from him? If it's money, there's been no demand. Do you think you can still trace the call?
Sam: Bo, I tried the *69 thing on the cell phone, and the line was blocked. It didn't work. There must be some other way to track that number. You know, I should tell you that the reason I called your cell phone and left the message on that was I -- I tried the police station while she was on the phone with Ben, and the police station just rang and rang and rang. No one picked up.
Bo: I'll check it out. You can go now.
Bo gets out his phone to call the station, while Sam pats Todd on the shoulder to get his attention.
Sam: You can go now.
Todd: (to Viki) You know, this is what you get for marrying a wise guy. You can't say I didn't warn you --
Sam: Hey! Hey!
Todd: We had a conversation --
Sam: Hey, hey, just shut up!
Bo glares at Todd, while Todd looks at Sam and says nothing.
--end scene--
When the scene returns, Sam has managed to get Todd into the foyer and away from Viki and Bo's conversation in the library.
Sam: Come on, come on, come on --
Todd: Look, relax, okay? I -- I didn't really mean that all about Ben. It's just that -- well, you know, the mob is a gift that keeps on giving.
Sam: Are you going to leave, or am I going to have to help you out of here bodily? Huh?
Todd: Okay, but I was just about to offer to help go find Ben. I found Nora, didn't I?
Sam: Yeah, and a lot of good it did her.
Sam goes over to the door to open it for Todd.
Sam: You know, in all the years I've known you, I've never been able to drum it through your thick skull that not everything is a joke!
Todd: Tell me about it! I come here with the biggest news of my life -- well, today, anyway -- and, I get nothing from you! If this were Will standing here, you'd be falling all over yourself!
Now Sam is pissed. He slams the door again and marches back over toward Todd.
Sam: If this were Will, Will would be standing here saying, "What can I do?" He'd want to help, and he'd mean it! Sometimes you just -- oh, what's the use?
Sam stalks back toward the library.
Todd: Fine! I don't need you! I -- you know, I live in a penthouse! I -- I got -- I own a newspaper! I got a brand new winter coat! And I'm going to get married! And believe me, once I'm married, I'm declaring war on this town! It's take-no-prisoners, scorched-Earth policy!
Sam: Does Blair know this side of you? I wonder if she does.
Todd: (menacing) Don't even think about talking to Blair and trying to get her to not marry me. Nobody, not you or anybody else, is gonna screw this up for me.
--end scene--
Sam: Look, I'm not going to spoil things for you, Todd. I want you to be happy. Believe me -- I don't think this marriage is going to do it, but I'm not going to interfere.
Todd: Fine, you don't interfere. Everything's fine. I'm happy, happy, happy.
Sam: Yeah, happy, happy, happy, happy. I see that all over your face. Look, don't get me wrong here -- I'm really glad that you went to therapy. I mean, it shows me that maybe you are really serious about getting your life back together, all right?
Todd: Okay, the thing about therapy is I'm not so sure that it's everything it's cut out to be. So I don't know if I'm going to stick with it. But you don't need to worry about me, Sam. I keep telling you -- I'm fine.
--end scene--
Sam: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, hey, there, you. Look. I hope you're hearing me here. I'm glad you went to therapy, but if you stop going to therapy and you insist on marrying Blair, I don't hold much hope for this relationship.
Todd: This from you? Okay, you got a kid, but you ain't got no wife. And Viki in there -- her brand-new husband's about to be offed by the mob. Looks like I'm the only one around here who knows how to hold down a relationship.
Todd stalks toward the door, flings it open, and steps out into the night. After he closes the door behind him, he pauses for a moment before walking away.
