Todd is in Rae's empty house, which he broke into in the hopes of having her "shrink" him in the middle of the night. Instead of finding Rae, he found his own hallucinations of Viki and Sam, who delivered warnings about Todd's bad behavior in the run-up to his engagement to Blair.

After the hallucinations vanish, Todd heaves a sign of relief and rummages around Rae's desk, apparently in the hope of finding something he can use to "shrink" himself. He turns on the lamp and computer, and while he waits for the computer to boot up, he opens up a heavy Bible that Rae has nearby. Noticing that it has a loose page in it, Todd reads the page aloud and quickly realizes that it references the parents who raised Rae's child who was given up for adoption.

Todd: "Rae Cummings. Adam and Althea Chandler." (with realization) No! Oh, and I thought I had problems! Rae is Skye's mother! (laughing) What do I do with information like that?

Todd uses Rae's copy machine to make a copy of the Bible page. As he waits for the copy to finish, he rifles through Rae's other papers and generally makes a mess until he is startled by another voice -- this one not imaginary.

John's Voice: Don't move, Manning!

Todd looks up to see John and Rae coming through the door toward him, with John pointing a gun in his direction. Todd quickly drops the Bible page and the copy he just made and puts his hands in the air.

John: Breaking and entering. Vandalism. You want to explain this, Manning?
Todd: I, uh, I -- I had a shrink-type emergency.
John: In the middle of the night??
Todd: (to Rae) Yeah, well, that's when I needed to talk to you.
Rae: So you decided to trash my office?
Todd: I didn't trash your -- (correcting himself) It's -- it's some papers. That's all.

Todd bends down to grab the copy of the Bible page, which he quickly stuffs in his pocket.

Todd: I -- I think of it as progress, you know? I could, uh, I could be out there, you know, hitting somebody in the head with a stick.
John: Or shooting someone in the back.
Todd: Okay, that's not fair. (to Rae) You -- you said that this was a place that I could come and talk to you anytime I had things that were bothering me.
John: You can do all the talking you want down at the police station.
Todd: I'm not talking to you anywhere! (to Rae) I need to talk to you.
John: And I need to ask a lot of questions. Come on.

John goes to grab Todd's arm.

Todd: Whoa.
John: Come on.
Todd: (to Rae) That -- that's it? You're just going to turn me over to Johnny Law? You know -- you know, you're the one who's sick! You -- you get somebody to trust you, and then you just turn your back on them.
John: That's enough.
Todd: You're a liar -- a liar!
John: Let's go!

John starts to drag Todd away, but Rae stops him.

Rae: Wait a minute. Wait. Let him go.

John is clearly surprised by Rae's command.

John: (to Rae) We have to talk.
Rae: Okay.
John: Come here.
Rae: (to Todd) Sit down.

Todd sits in the desk chair as John and Rae head over to another part of the room to talk quietly.

John: You know I fought to get Skye released on bail because I believe she's innocent. Did you know that she passed her lie-detector test?
Rae: (in happy disbelief) No!
John: Yeah.
Rae: But it doesn't have anything to do with him.
John: Listen to me -- I think he really knows what happened. I think he may have even shot Max.
Rae: You can't interrogate him here. I'm his therapist. He came to me for help, John. He's right, you know. This is his only safe place.
John: Oh, is that why he broke in here and trashed the place?
Rae: That's between him and me.
John: Excuse me, but you do have an obligation to your daughter.
Rae: But I have an obligation to him as his therapist, don't I?
John: Well, Dr. Cummings, I can promise you it will not be reciprocated. You be careful. Manning takes a very special pleasure in punishing the people who try and help him.
Rae: (reassuringly) Hey, it does come with the territory. It does.
John: Oh, yeah? So what are you going to do if he talks about the shooting, huh? What are you going to do if he tells you something that exonerates your daughter and incriminates himself? Then what? You still going to invoke doctor-patient confidentiality?
Rae: Right now, all I can do is live in the moment, and the moment is he needs my help. I'm his therapist. I -- I have to be there for him.

Todd chooses this moment to interrupt them.

Todd: Okay, Rae. You make up your mind? You turning your back on me now, or what?

John looks at Todd in exasperation and then turns to Rae.

John: (to Rae) Call me when you're done.
Rae: Okay.
John: (to Todd) If you do anything to upset her --
Todd: Come on, now -- your lady friend is safe with me. Scout's honor.
Rae: John. I'll walk you out. Come on.

Rae pulls at John's arm.

Rae: Todd? Sit down. Go ahead. I'll be right back.

Rae takes John toward the door.

Rae: Hey, hey, hey -- I'm going to be fine. I'm going to be fine.
John: I don't hear from you in an hour, I'll be back.
Rae: I'm going to be fine. Now, go on. Go.

John reluctantly goes out the door but turns around once more to see her.

Rae: I'm going to be fine.

John leaves, and Rae closes the door and heads back into the living room, where Todd finally sits down on one of the armchairs.

Todd: Thank God he's gone! I thought he'd never leave.
Rae: Okay, what's this "middle of the night shrink emergency"? Hm?
Todd: Well, I had some thoughts.
Rae: Mm. About what?
Todd: Something I did.
Rae: Oh. Okay, let's talk about it.
Todd: No, let's talk about mothers.

Rae, predictably, looks upset.

Rae: (trying to stay composed) Why do you want to talk about mothers?
Todd: Well, because when it comes right down to it, it's really all about the mama.
Rae: I thought your issues were with your father.
Todd: Step-father. Yeah, but the mother -- I mean, that -- that's the big enchilada. The mother is the mother of all enchiladas.

Rae takes a seat on the other couch.

Rae: Why do you say that, Todd?
Todd: Because the relationship between a mother and a child should be very special. Because, you know, really, it's the mother who gives birth, and that's big.
Rae: Yeah, it is big.
Todd: You know, I never talked about this with anybody. Not even Viki or -- or Sam.
Rae: Well, it's like what you said, Todd -- this is -- this is a safe place for you. You can just let go of some of those secrets. You'll also let go of the power that they have over you. You know, it's like -- it's like all those little demons, -- they hate to be exposed to the light because then we can actually talk about them, and we can see them for what they really are. You understand?
Todd: Oh, I understand. The thing I don't understand is how a mother can give birth to a child and then just walk away and not know whether the kid is alive or dead or -- or anything, really.

Rae is looking very uncomfortable.

Todd: What would be even worse is if a mother were to let the child think that someone else was the child's mother.
Rae: But, you know, sometimes a woman is forced to give up a child, and sometimes -- sometimes it's not her fault.
Todd: The kid doesn't know that. All the kid knows is that something's wrong, and the kid thinks that it's the kid's fault, especially if it's a great, big secret. Yeah, that kid would be really, really messed up. You know, you're right -- I feel much better just -- just talking about it. You know, you're -- you're good. You're very, very good.

Todd gets up from the couch to leave.

Rae: Um, wait a minute. What about -- what about the other thoughts you had? What about what you did?
Todd: You know, it's late. I'll let you go.
Rae: We'll, uh -- we'll talk about this again in the next session, all right?
Todd: Yeah, great.

Todd goes to leave but then turns around to land a parting shot.

Todd: Yeah, we should -- we should talk much more about how -- how a mother can really screw up a kid.

Rae is so upset she doesn't turn around to look at Todd as he keeps talking.

Todd: Do me a favor, will you? Make sure your boyfriend knows that I didn't say or do anything that would upset you.

With that, Todd heads out the door, while Rae looks like she is fighting back tears. Out on the doorstep, Todd takes the copied Bible page from his pocket, looks at it, chuckles to himself, and then walks off into the night.
