Todd Asks Rae for Help With Blair

When the scene opens, a patient is sitting in one of the armchairs at Rae's house as she takes notes.

Patient: And I've been working on what we talked about last week. (quoting Rae) "You need to be more self-aware" --

Todd storms through the front door, and they both jump to their feet.

Todd: Oh, boy, do I have --
Rae: No, no, no, no! (to the patient) Sit down! Sit down!

The patient quickly sits back down.

Rae: Todd! Todd? I am with a patient!
Todd: (to the patient) Get out.

The patient goes to stand.

Rae: No, no -- don't you dare!

The patient sits back down.

Rae: You just stay right where you are. (to Todd) You are never going to get any more work out of me, ever, if you don't leave this moment!
Todd: (hauling the guy out of the chair) No, really, he doesn't mind.
Patient: I don't mind at all.
Rae: Well, I mind! Sit down!

The patient sits back down.

Rae: (to Todd) You don't have an appointment! This man does! I'm the one in charge here -- me!
Todd: No, no, but I need you more than he does. (to the patient) Isn't that right?
Patient: It seems to be the case.

The patient goes to stand back up.

Rae: No, no! No, no, sit -- sit!

The patient sits back down.

Rae: Now, listen to me -- from where I'm standing, you have two choices here. You can go and come back when you do have an appointment, or you can stay and I'm going to call a cop, and I'm going to have you put in jail. Do you understand that?
Todd: Is this what you call tough love?
Rae: (exasperated) Oh!

Rae heads to the phone, while the patient jumps back out of his chair.

Patient: You know what? I think we could probably wrap this up at next week's session, so I'll just let myself out.

Todd makes crazy motions with his fingers as the patient runs out of the house.

Rae: Ugh!
Todd: What are you doing?
Rae: I'm calling John, and I'm having you thrown out of here.
Todd: I got to talk to you.

Rae stays turned away from him, ignoring him.

Todd: Lady, listen to me. (he knocks on the nearby table) Hey! (screaming) Hey!

Rae turns to him.

Todd: Come on, look, I -- I got nowhere else to go. Please?

Rae reluctantly hangs up the phone.

Rae: What happened?
Todd: Blair doesn't want to marry me. Hey, you -- you got to fix that. You -- you got to make it so that Blair wants to marry me again.

--end scene--
Rae: All right, Todd. Try to hear this, all right? I want to help you.

Todd jumps over the back of the couch and rolls onto it, onto his back.

Rae: But there's just so much a therapist can do.

She shoves his feet off the couch, and Todd reluctantly sits up, grabbing a pillow to sit on as he does so.

Rae: I can only work with you -- I can't change what someone else thinks or feels about you.
Todd: No. You gotta fix me, and if you can't do that, then what good are you?
Rae: No, no, no, no, no, you are the one that changes you -- not anybody else. I can try and help you do that. This is not magic here. This is a lot of work.
Todd: Huh! "Work"! You ask me a bunch of stupid questions, and I give you a ton of money. Nice work if you can get it.

Rae sits down on the arm of the sofa.

Rae: Okay. Okay. Blair. Why do you think Blair has backed out of wanting to marry you?
Todd: Because she's afraid that things are going to get screwed up -- because they always do. But -- but not anymore, 'cause you're going to fix that, right?
Rae: You know what? I think we had an ethical problem here. I -- I really do. (sighs)
Todd: Okay, first of all, I never have an ethical problem, ever. Second of all, you have an ethical problem?
Rae: Yeah.
Todd: What is with you? You know, every time you say that I should do this therapy thing, and then when I get here to do it, you -- you quit before I even get started!
Rae: You know that John is a very good friend of mine, and he's investigating Max's shooting, and you happen to be one of the few suspects. You understand what?
Todd: Yeah, I understand that.
Rae: Okay, good.
Todd: Here's how we clear that up. You know who shot Max? It was your --

Todd breaks off for a significant pause.

Todd: Your friend Skye Chandler.

Rae is caught off guard by the mention of Skye, and Todd knows she won't pursue this any further.

Todd: Come on, come on, come on, come on -- get to it. Get to it. How do I get Blair?
Rae: I think we have a problem with language. "Get Blair"? You make her sound like she's some kind of possession. Is she?
Todd: You know what I mean. Quit picking on me.
Rae: No, no. Objects are simple. Human beings are very complicated. I would -- I would bet that you would know that better than almost anyone. Blair has just gone through a very difficult marriage. (sighing) Not to mention that her husband was shot. Maybe she's just not ready to be "got" quite so soon.
Todd: I helped her out of this whole big mess, right? So she should marry me.
Rae: Oh, so you think you deserve it? That -- that she owes you this?
Todd: Yeah.
Rae: So that's what you think marriage is? It's a -- a deal?
Todd: Isn't it?
Rae: I think that people probably want a little more out of it than that.
Todd: You should see the ring I got her. She's getting plenty out of it.
Rae: Emotional presents. Emotional presents? You know? Make her feel like she's loved? Make her feel like you know who she is and how specal she is to you?
Todd: So a huge diamond doesn't do that?
Rae: It would be as though you would arrange to have her see her favorite play, or you would plant roses in her garden if she loved roses. I -- I don't know. You -- you have to tell me what -- what is Blair like?
Todd: What, like, gifts like -- oh, emotional --
Rae: Right.
Todd: -- presents.
Rae: So, can you think of one?

Todd stares into the distance, giving it thought, and then jumps off the sofa.

Rae: What? Where -- where are you going now? We have time left.
Todd: No, no, I -- I don't need it. I don't need it. You -- you're good. You're very, very good!

Todd strolls out of the house, while Rae sinks back against the couch and holds her head in her hands.

Rae: Oh, God.
