Starr Covers for T&B With John and Rae

Todd and Starr are in Blair's Palace suite waiting for Blair to return from seeing Kelly. The mood is a little awkward, however, as Starr has just asked Todd to give her a baby brother. Todd sits down on the bed next to her.
Todd: You know, Starr, you -- you think that you want a little brother, but, really, you gotta think about it some more, okay? 'Cause little brothers -- they smell bad, and -- and they get all of the attention, and -- and then when I'm dead, you won't get all the money. You'll have to give him half.
Starr: I don't care. I want one.
Todd sighs heavily, but they are interrupted by the sound of a knock at the door. Todd gets up to get it and finds John Sykes and Rae there. Todd doesn't know this, but Rae has insisted that John question Starr to see if there may in fact be another suspect in Max's shooting, which could help to save Skye's case.
John: Mr. Manning. Hello, Starr.
Todd: Uh, we're busy.
John: We'll be quick. I -- uh, I need to talk to Starr.
Todd: She can't speak now. She's got larangytis.
Starr: No, I don't!
John: It'll just be a few minutes -- I promise. (walking past Todd) Excuse me.
Rae follows John into the room.
Rae: (to Todd) Hello.
John heads over toward the bed and gets down to meet Starr at eye-level, while Rae sits in a chair by the fireplace and glares at Todd.
John: Hi. Hi, Starr. My name is Detective John Sykes, I'm with the police department, and I need your help. See, there's something that we're trying to find the truth about and, uh, well, I need to know if you have any idea who shot your uncle Max.
Starr: I don't have an "Uncle Max." He's not even part of my family.
John: Oh! Oh. Oh, okay. But you know the man I'm talking about, right? Max Buchanan? He used to be married to your mom?
At this point, Todd goes over to sit on the bed next to Starr.
Todd: Okay, Starr, you don't have to answer anything if you don't want to --
John: You know, I think that Starr can speak for herself. She seems very grown-up to me, and, uh, I'll listen to anything she has to say. Starr, do you have any idea who shot Max Buchanan?
Starr: (smiling smugly) Yes.
John looks at Todd, who looks worried.

Todd: You know, Starr, you don't have to say anything if you don't want to. I mean, if your throat hurts, you can just keep quiet!
Starr: I told you I'm fine, Daddy.
John: Starr, I know this is upsetting, but I really need for you to tell me who you saw shoot Max.
Starr: I can't say it.
John: Okay, you don't have to talk about it. Just tell me who it was.
Starr: I would be a tattle-tale, and everyone will hate me.
Todd: Okay, you're -- you're right about that. You know what?
Todd gets off the bed and goes to pick Starr up to carry her out of the room.
Todd: Come on, Starr. It's really time to go.
John: Wait, wait, Starr, please! Really, we really need your help here. You see, whoever did this did a really, really bad thing, and what we need to find out who it was so we can stop them from ever hurting anyone again. Now, I know you're afraid, but I promise you no one's gonna hurt you.
Starr: (looking at Rae) She might.
Rae: Why would you say that, Starr?
Starr: Because you did it! She's the one who shot Max!
Todd is as surprised to hear this as John and Rae are.
Rae: No, I didn't. I really didn't. (looking at Todd suspiciously) But I wonder why you would think that.
John: Now, Starr, I'm sure you know it's not a good thing to lie to a police officer. Take your time, so, if you want to think about it and tell me again what really happened.
Starr: Do I speak English?? The spiky-haired lady shot Max!
Todd: Okay, there you go. You asked a question, and she answered it. You know, I think you should go now. Really. I think you should get out of here.
Rae: (to John) Come on. Let's go.
John: Thank you, Starr.
John and Rae head toward the door, but John isn't finished with Todd.
John: Mr. Manning, this isn't over. This is going to require a follow-up. I suggest you and your daughter be prepared.
Todd directs them out the door and closes it behind them. Then he turns to Starr.
Todd: Where did you get that?
Starr: You'll be mad.
Todd: No, no, really, I -- I won't be mad.
Starr: I did a pretty good job spying on you and Mommy, didn't I?
Todd now realizes what happened.
Todd: Oh, yes, you did. You really did.
--end scene--
Todd: Well, that was fun, huh? We're pretty high up -- you got any water balloons?
Starr: Do I get a baby brother or don't I?
Todd takes a seat across from the bed.
Todd: You know, Starr, just because your mother and I are getting married, it doesn't mean that -- that, uh -- well, that -- that the stork is gonna show up.
Starr: The stork?? That's a dumb story grown-ups use because they're afraid to talk about sex.
Todd: (flinching) Ah.
Neither of them notice that Blair is entering the room as Starr makes her next point.
Starr: Now, if you and Mommy love each other so much, then you could have another baby!
Todd sees Blair come through the door.
Starr: Then we could be a real family.
Blair: Starr! I think that we already are -- (she sits on the bed next to Starr) -- a real family!
Starr: But I want us to have a baby.
Blair looks at Todd, who avoids looking back at her.
Blair: Well, you know, sweetheart, we could, but then you know what? Daddy and I -- we wouldn't be able to give you all that attention that you love so much. And you know all those toys that you have? Then you'd have to share them, and we want you to stay our princess.
Starr slides off the bed and shoots Blair a pointed look.
Starr: I'm not giving up.
Starr is about to leave but turns around and tosses one more remark out before she does.
Starr: Oh, yeah, I told the police about the spiky-haired lady.
Todd winces as Blair looks horrified.
Blair: What is she talking about?
Todd: Don't look at me, all right? She told -- she told John that Rae shot Max.
Blair: What??
Todd: She didn't get it from me, all right?
Blair: What??
Todd: She was spying on us.
Blair: What?? Todd, we cannot get her involved like this!
Todd gets up off the chair.
Todd: Hey, hey --
Blair: It's way too complicated!
Todd: She's fine! Starr's fine! Listen to me. Everything's going to be okay -- trust me. Everything is gonna be fine.
