Todd Visits The Banner
At The Banner, Clint drops by Viki's office just in time to see "Viki" (really her alternate personality Tori) angrily tossing a framed portrait of Victor Lord in the trash. When Clint questions "Viki" about why she is getting rid of the picture, Tori makes up an excuse about being angry that Victor's son, Todd, is now here raiding The Banner staff. As "Viki"/Tori and Clint talk, Todd himself shows up and picks the picture of Victor up out of the trashcan.
Todd: If you're gonna throw this picture out, can I have it?
--end scene--
Clint: What do you want, Manning?
Todd: I came to talk to Quincy.
Clint: On Banner time?
Todd: But first I thought I'd stop by and say hello to my favorite sister.
Tori walks over to him. Though she was previously friendly to Todd during her last encounter with him at T&B's penthouse (when she gave him advice about The Sun), that was when no one else was around. Now, in front of Clint, she acts icy cold, just as Clint would expect her to be.
"Viki"/Tori: Our family ties do not entitle you to simply walk in my office unannounced any time you want. (she grabs the framed picture back)
Todd: Well, forgive me. I'm just a humble bastard. (bowing his head slightly) I'm new to the ways of the Lordly family.
"Viki"/Tori: Oh, knock it off.
Tori walks away from Todd, while Clint walks toward him.
Clint: Manning, you don't have any business here. Now, if you want to make offers to The Banner employees, do it on their time and on your own turf. Don't come around here waving a fist full of cash in one hand and a bunch of fat contracts in the other.
Todd: Fine. But Quincy's off in about two minutes, so I think I'll stick around. Tick-tock.
Todd leaves, and Clint shuts the door behind him.
"Viki"/Tori: I hate it when he comes around here.
Clint: You handled him very well.
"Viki"/Tori: I've gotta admit, he's got nerve.
Clint: Yes, among other things. I'll take care of him. I don't want him on the premises.
Clint goes to leave the office when suddenly one of the staff members, Cheryl, comes through the door.
Cheryl: Oh!
Clint: Oh, Cheryl.
Cheryl: Excuse me. Uh, Mr. Buchanan, you have a call on line five.
Clint: Oh, thanks, Cheryl.
Cheryl leaves, and Clint goes to leave, too, but Tori stops him.
"Viki"/Tori: You can take it in here. I'll leave if you need privacy.
Clint: Don't be silly. You don't have to leave.
Clint answers the phone.
Clint: Yeah, Buchanan. Yeah. Oh, yes, I'm interested. You pick the time. 10 o'clock, pier 16. Bet on it. I'll be there.
As Clint is talking, Tori eavsdrops and is clearly committing the information to memory. When Clint gets off the phone, he eagerly turns to her.
Clint: Well, that sounds like one heck of a scoop, and it just fell into our laps!
--end scene--
Meanwhile, Todd, after leaving Viki's office, heads through the Banner offices, where all the staff members stop what they are doing to watch him come through, though none speak to him. He makes his way over to where Briggs is leafing through a folder.
Todd: You packing up, huh?
Briggs: (nods)
Todd: I'll see you first thing tomorrow morning. I think your new offices are gonna be a lot nicer than this...sweatshop.
Briggs doesn't reply, as Todd heads over to Quincy's desk nearby.
Todd: Hey, Quince. Time's up.
Quincy: Do we have to do this here?
Todd: Yep. I need an answer. Do you want to be the senior editor of The Sun, or not?
Quincy stands up from his desk to face Todd, as Briggs, carrying a box of his personal effects, stops to watch.
Suddenly, Kevin, followed by Andy, comes rushing over to the scene.
Kevin: What the hell are you doing here, Todd? And I hope it's not because Quincy accepted your offer, because he is much too good a newsman to work at some rag like yours!
As Kevin has been talking, Clint comes into the main office and watches the scene.
Todd: (to Quincy) Well?
Clint: (approaching Todd) Todd? Do your business someplace else.
Clint leaves Todd to go confer with Kevin, and Todd continues addressing Quincy.
Todd: Nevermind the high-and-mighty Buchanan faction. They like to throw their birthright around. So what's it gonna be? You gonna stay here, or you gonna move over to The Sun for twice as much money and twice as much power?
Quincy appears to be considering Todd's words, and from a few feet away, Clint is watching and listening, as are all of the other staff members.
--end scene--
Quincy: It's a great offer you made me, but The Banner's my home -- these people are like my family. So I'm staying home.
The staff members errupt into applause. Todd, of course, is not happy.
Todd: You're saying no to me?
He suddenly seems to realize that he needs to save face somehow.
Todd: Well, you win some, you lose some. (pointedly, to Briggs) Isn't that right, Charlie?
Quincy: I hope you can find somebody to fill the position.
Todd: (walking away from Quincy) Oh, don't worry -- that won't be hard. There's a million people that would jump at the chance that you just threw away.
Clint: (walking toward Todd) Todd, your business is done here. Please leave.
Todd: (to Briggs) Buy you a drink, Charlie?
Briggs: (to Clint) I'm sorry it worked out like this --
Clint: Look, don't even mention it, Briggs. A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do.
Todd's phone rings.
Todd: That's me. (to Briggs) I'll be with you in a minute.
Clint: (to Todd) I told you, uh, to take your business out of here.
Before Todd and Clint can get into it, Cheryl approaches them.
Cheryl: Excuse me, Mr. Buchanan -- Mr. Harrells is waiting in your office.
Clint: Thank you, Cheryl. Todd, I mean it -- when I get back, don't be here.
Clint leaves with Cheryl to go to his office, while Todd stares after him in distaste.
Todd: Buzz off. (answering his phone) This is Manning.
Viewers can see that the person who is calling Clint is Tori, though she's trying to disguise her voice by holding a napkin over the phone.
"Viki"/Tori: I got a hot tip for you, Mr. Manning.
Todd looks intrigued.
--end scene--
When the scene returns, Tori feeds Todd more information about the potential story.
"Viki"/Tori: Teen gangs.
Todd: What about 'em?
"Viki"/Tori: They're in your own backyard.
Todd: That's not news.
"Viki"/Tori: What about where they're getting their guns from?
Todd: (intrigued) Well, that would be news.
"Viki"/Tori: Send your best reporter to the docks tonight -- pier 16, 10 o'clock.
Todd: Who are you?
"Viki"/Tori: A friend.
Todd hangs up the phone and turns to Briggs.
Todd: Let's go, Briggs. And get ready to break The Sun's first major story.
Briggs takes his box and follows Todd out of the office, as Kevin glares after them both.
