The Past Is Present for OLTL's Spencer (Soap Opera Digest 7/18/06)

Spencer's murky past comes into (somewhat) greater focus as Blair's quest to bring down her lover heats up.

At the beginning of the week, Spencer confronts David after his brother pleads guilty to the murder of Thomas McBain. "Spencer is telling him, 'You can get out of this, but you've got to trust me and let me help you. Don't be stupid and admit guilt when you don't even know what the truth is,'" reports Paul Satterfield (Spencer). "David's like, 'Spencer, I shot the guy; I'm responsible and I'm tired of running and of you holding this over my head. I'm ready to put it out there and let the chips fall where they may.' Spencer implores him not to do so."

And when Spencer has flashbacks revealing that he was present in the alley when McBain was shot, "You're going to see that he was more involved in this whole thing than you would have imagined," previews Satterfield. "He was trying to protect his little brother from a situation that had gotten out of hand. You see a guy standing in an alley with a gun trained on your little brother, what are you going to do? Especially if you're the reason he's there, if you sent him into that situation in the first place."

Viewers may become privy to these facts, but Blair is still on the hunt for answers and administers a truth serum to Spencer. "Blair is Spencer's Achilles' heel," Satterfield sighs. "Even when Spencer realizes that he's been drugged, he doesn't suspect her of doing it. Blair can be effective right now because he trusts her, but over the next couple of weeks, we start to see moments where things just don't quite add up and he starts to suspect that she might be into something."

In the meantime, though, Blair's efforts "backfire on her," according to Satterfield. "By the time the drug has really kicked in enough for him to slip up and start answering some of her questions, he's not in his right mind anymore," he explains. "He's not sitting there all warm and fuzzy, spilling the beans about his entire past; he actually has a very dark reaction -- and he goes to a different place that we've never seen."

"I don't know how it will all pan out," Satterfield concludes, "but he's calculating the different possibilities. He's prepared not to leave any loose ends."
