Thumbs Down! Misery Doesn't Love Company (Soap Opera Digest 2/22/05)
When Todd and Blair got engaged (again), we hoped they'd finally deal with
the difficulties that plagued their four marriages. Instead, they've been
thrown yet another "obstacle" -- psychotic Margaret kidnapping Todd -- which
is contrived and painful to watch.
It's bad enough that Peg capturing Todd by injuring his legs was a blatant
rip-off of Misery. And that it took Blair forever to realize he was in trouble.
And that Todd "almost" kept getting rescued. And that Todd and Peg keep having
"mishaps" (An avalanche! An explosion!). But the worst has been viewing WEEKS
of Todd suffering as Peg begs and begs him to impregnate her.
Yes, Todd (a convicted rapist) has done heinous things, but watching ANYONE
get tortured disturbs us. And disturbed also describes our reaction to Peg's
icky double entendres, played for laughs against Todd's agony.
When it comes to Todd and Blair, we're interested in seeing interpersonal
drama. This campy mess isn't cutting it.
