Todd Forces Blair To Take A Pregnancy Test

At the penthouse, an excited Blair is preparing for tonight's intimate dinner with Todd. She's all dressed up and lighting candles on the table when Todd arrives. While Blair thinks he's been meeting with the lawyer about the Lord trust fund, he's actually been out talking to Asa Buchanan about the possibility that Blair is faking her pregnancy.

Blair: Todd! How did it go? Your meeting? With the lawyers?

Todd continues walking into the penthouse; he doesn't answer her.

Blair: (a little unnerved) What's wrong? They -- they can't keep you from getting the money, can they?

This is, of course, the wrong thing for Blair to say here, and Todd stares at her for a moment before continuing.

Todd: I didn't go to the lawyer. I went to see Asa Buchanan.

Blair is clearly taken aback. But though she knows exactly why Todd went there, she seems determined not to show it.

--end scene--

Blair's nerves betray her as she briefly struggles to light one of the candles.

Blair: Why would you even want to talk to Asa? He's a disgusting, vindictive, miserable old man. He's the scum of the earth, Todd, and he hates my guts. You know that.
Todd: Forget Asa. It's you that I want to talk about. I'm gonna ask you one more time, and I want you to tell me the truth. Are you pregnant?
Blair: Yes! Of course I am! You know that!
Todd: Okay.

Todd takes out the pregnancy test he bought from the pharmacy earlier and tosses it onto the table, where it looks wildly out of place amongst the elegant silver and stemware.

Todd: There's the test. You say you're pregnant? Prove it.

--end scene--

Blair shakes her head slightly in disbelief.

Todd: What? What are you shaking your head like that for? Go on. Nothing to worry about if you're really pregnant, is there?

He takes a few steps closer to Blair.

Todd: Is there?

While Todd is speaking, Blair's had a chance to figure out exactly how she wants to play it: she turns on him.

Blair: How could you do this to me?
Todd: How could I do this to you?
Blair: Yes! Everything that we have built together -- it's gone, Todd! There's no trust -- there's no marriage!
Todd: (scoffing) Oh, come on!
Blair: What? For this? This -- this inquisition?? It's not worth it! What am I supposed to do now? Where am I supposed to go? You've ruined everything -- don't you see? You've ruined everything, Todd!

During her rant, Blair has stalked away from Todd to stand behind him, but he keeps his face turned away from her as he takes in her words.

Todd: Well, I guess that answers my question, then, doesn't it? You're really not pregnant, are you?

Now, Todd turns slightly toward her, but she just stares at him in defiant silence.

--end scene--

Blair begins anxiously pacing the room.

Blair: Todd, I have been honest from -- from the minute I found out that I was carrying your child! I could have told Cord it was his child. But did I? No! I was honest. And this -- (gesturing to the pregnancy test) -- is what I get??
Todd: You're changing the subject --
Blair: No, no, Todd, the subject is us! It's our life, our family! And we could have had everything. But you just threw it away. We used to share this together. It was us against Llanview. But --

Blair falters a bit as Todd just stares at her in silence.

Blair: But you -- we could have made it work, Todd!
Todd: Well, here's your chance to put it all back on track.
Blair: Oh, no, no, no, no. It's too late now. You took Tina's -- Tina's! -- word over mine. And Asa's?? The two people that hate me the most! And then you come here and go -- (she snatches the pregnancy test and then throws it back down on the table in imitation of Todd) "Here! Take the test, Blair! Prove it! Prove that you're pregnant!" Well, you just took the test, Todd, and you failed.
Todd: What test? What are you talking about?
Blair: The marriage test, Todd. You didn't have any proof of anything that they were saying, yet you believed them so fast, so easily. So that just proves that we didn't have anything, and whatever we did have you just threw away!
Todd: (exasperated) Look, Blair, we're talking about history here, okay? This doesn't come out of left field. I've got a right to ask these questions. Now, where do you get off putting all this on me?
Blair: Oh, great -- that's what you think I'm doing? "Getting off"?? There's just too much doubt, too much suspicion. And I get enough of that from the people in this crummy town. I don't need any more coming from you.

Blair's doing a good enough job with her show of righteous indignation that Todd is now the one on the defensive.

Todd: All right, you listen to me -- we're not talking about the people in this --
Blair: No, no, you listen to me, Todd. You start listening to me now. You got one chance -- a small one -- if you wanna make this work. And that's you pick that -- (she gestures to the pregnancy test) -- up right now, and you throw it away. And maybe, just maybe, we can salvage our future. But it is your choice, Todd. You make it. One way or the other.

Todd looks at Blair but stays silent.

--end scene--

Blair sits down on a chair next to the fire and looks up at Todd expectantly.

Blair: Well? Todd, I'm waiting. What's your decision?
Todd: All right. (clearing throat) I'm sorry. I mean that...if my asking for this has caused a big problem.
Blair: (softly) Okay.
Todd: You're the last person in the world that I want to hurt, Blair.

Todd kneels down beside her chair.

Todd: I -- I owe you too much. When I needed a friend, you were there for me.
Blair: (sitting up a little straighter in her chair) So what are you gonna do, Todd?
Todd: Oh, I know what I have to do. And I know what you have to do. I want you to do this. I know that's not what you want to hear, but I need for you to take this test.
Blair: What?? Todd, you just said that --

Todd gets to his feet.

Todd: Look, try and see this the way I'm seeing it, okay? All right, you come to me, you tell me that you're pregnant.
Blair: Todd!
Todd: You tell me that it's -- that it's my kid, and then we get married. I don't ask for any kind of proof -- I just do the right thing. And now, less than a month later, I'm about to get 27.8 million dollars, and -- and you're gonna get to share in that. Because you're my wife, and that's how it works -- for better or for worse.
Blair: Oh, God --

Blair jumps to her feet and walks away from Todd, keeping her back to him.

Blair: -- this is worse!
Todd: No, no, you see, we've had the bad part, now we're gonna get to the good part. But along with this money, I get a new family, right? And my new sister, she says that you knew about this inheritance long before I did!
Blair: (whirling on Todd) Oh, and you believe her??
Todd: Asa Buchanan said that you faked a pregnancy when you were married to him.
Blair: Todd, God, I told you about that a long time ago! Todd, I don't want any secrets! I didn't want any between you and me. I didn't!
Todd: Yeah, well, to hear Asa talk about it, it sounds a little different.
Blair: Well, that's because he was talking about me, Todd!
Todd: Look...

Todd walks over to Blair.

Todd: I can't help feeling the way I'm feeling, all right? I mean, I can't just turn this off. I have doubts!
Blair: Well, your doubts are your own problem.
Todd: No, they are our problem, okay? And we need to get past them. This is just you and me, Blair. Nobody else needs to know about this. But I need to be sure -- for me. I need for you to prove everybody else wrong for me -- for this future you keep talking about, for this baby. Take the test.
Blair: Or else what?
Todd: Or I'm outta here, right now, and I'm not coming back.

--end scene--

Todd holds up the "For Sure" brand pregnancy box.

Todd: You know how to use one of these, right? You said that's how you found out you were pregnant in the first place.
Blair: (icily) Yes, I know how to use one. It just wasn't "For Sure."
Todd: Well, let me see if I can help you.

Todd goes to open the box and Blair snatches it away from him.

Blair: Oh, please! Don't bother! The directions are very clear on the box. But I'm telling you -- there's one or two things you need to know about this first.
Todd: What are you talking about now?
Blair: Well, you need to take this first thing in the morning for the best results. And if you take it at night, you might not get a -- a positive result, no matter how pregnant you are.
Todd: Well, I'll tell you what -- if it comes out negative, you take it again tomorrow morning. Or better yet, we'll go make an appointment with the doctor, and we'll really find out first thing tomorrow morning. How's that? That fair?
Blair: (angrily) Fine, fine. I'll take your little test. And then you'll know "for sure."
Todd: (in a regretful voice) Yeah. We will.

Blair stalks off to the bathroom, but hesitates for a moment as she watches Todd (whose back is turned to her). She glares at him and then leaves the room.

--end scene--

Blair returns to the room, test in hand. Todd is sitting at the table.

Todd: Are you finished?
Blair: Right.

Blair angrily sets the test back down on the table in front of Todd.

Blair: Finished.
Todd: (looking at the box) Well, if these instructions are right, we should know what we're talking about in a few minutes. Maybe five minutes.
Blair: Well, I already have my answer. You wanted what you wanted so bad that you were willing to throw away everything that we had. Our marriage. And who knows what it might have grown into.
Todd: (avoiding her eyes) Still might.
Blair: No way, Todd. No way. Nothing between us will ever be the same again. And I hope that you are happy. (she walks away from the table)
Todd: All right, do we really need to play this whole thing out? (he stands up) I mean, do I even need to really look at this test? Because from the way you're talking, I'm beginning to wonder maybe you haven't already given me my answer. Have you? Are you saying you're not pregnant?
Blair: (emotionally) We could have been so happy.

Blair goes to look out the window, signaling that she has no intention of answering Todd's question.

Todd: Fine. We'll play this any way you want to play it. Won't be long now.

--end scene--

When the scene returns, Blair is still staring out the window, and Todd is pacing around the room. He finally returns to the pregnancy test box and looks at the test inside.

Todd: Blair?

Blair ignores him, so he walks over toward her.

Todd: Turn around. Look at me.

But Blair, who is now fighting back tears, refuses to turn to face him.

Todd: (loudly) Turn around!

Finally, Blair turns from the window to look at Todd. She has tears in her eyes as she anticipates what Todd is about to say...

--end scene--

Even though Blair is crying, she tries to hide that fact by turning her anger on the suddenly silent Todd.

Blair: Well, you've got your answer! Just say it! What are you waiting for?? Say it, Todd! Say it! Say it!

But Todd stays quiet.

--end scene--

Blair: Well, say something for God's sake!
Todd: You're pregnant.
Blair: What?
Todd: You really are. You're pregnant.

Blair is stunned, but of course, she can't show it.

Blair: Well, I told you that I was!
Todd: Yeah, but --

Now that Blair's gotten over the shock, she's a lot more confident -- now she knows how to play this.

Blair: Oh, but my word wasn't good enough, right? (sarcastic laugh) I was the liar!
Todd: No, you told the truth. Look, I was sweating this out, too. Look, this is all that I've got, okay? This is my life, too! You, me -- this is everything!
Blair: Is it? No, it was all that you had. Now there are millions. Buy yourself a new wife!
Todd: Look, I'm sorry, what do you want me to say? I had to ask you to do this!
Blair: No, you didn't, Todd! No, you didn't. You could have trusted me!
Todd: I wanted to! I mean, I really tried to!
Blair: (scoffing) Oh --
Todd: You -- you can ask them! I defended you!
Blair: Who?? Asa? Tina?
Todd: Yeah! Look, they told me that you had faked a pregnancy when you were married to Asa, and they made me think that you might be playing me, and too many people have done that to me too many times. I had to see for my own eyes!
Blair: (coolly) Well, now you have.
Todd: Oh, why can't you understand this?
Blair: Oh, you believed the two people that hate me the most in this whole world -- that's what I understand! Asa, who's made more shady deals than there are days of the year! And you believed Tina over me, and she's the one that tried to steal your inheritance!

When Todd speaks again, it's as much to himself as it is to Blair -- he avoids looking at her.

Todd: Go ahead. I -- I deserve this.
Blair: Well, I don't! I don't. I have been truthful with you from the minute we hooked up, Todd. And I begged you: "Don't -- don't put our new relationship on the line!" But, no, you had to go ahead and do what you had to do. Well, now it's my turn.
Todd: Meaning what?
Blair: Meaning pack your stuff and get outta here.
Todd: (shocked) What??
Blair: I mean get out! You heard me! And don't look back, Todd...'cause we're finished. You finished it, and I don't ever want to see you again, ever! Do you hear me??

--end scene--

Todd: I screwed up! What, like you've never done that? Like you've never hurt somebody that -- that might have meant something to you? Look, this -- this whole trust thing -- I'm not very good at it. It's all new to me. I -- I'll get better at it. I mean, if I get the shot.
Blair: "If"?
Todd: Yeah. I mean, I'm hoping that there's still a chance here. Come on -- give this some time. You'll get over it.
Blair: You think that I'm just so greedy that I won't throw you out just because of the money? I don't care how much money that you've got from the inheritance.
Todd: (interrupting her) No, I don't think this is about the money! I think that this is about you wanting this baby to have a father, which is what I want to be! If you could just give me a chance. Look, Blair, don't punish this kid just because I acted like a moron, okay? Okay?
Blair: All right, look -- we can talk this out at least. Okay.

Todd sighs in relief.

Todd: You know what? I -- I think I need something to drink. I'm gonna pour us some wine. You mind? (suddenly realizing) Water! I'll get you water -- I'll get me some wine.
Blair: Fine, I -- I'm a little dry myself. We could both use a -- a minute. So water, that'd be fine.

Todd awkwardly, quickly, leaves the room to get the drinks. As soon as he's gone, Blair picks up the test to inspect it herself.

Blair: Oh my God! I am pregnant! Oh my God! (laughing) Oh, there is a God!

--end scene--

When the scene returns, Todd has returned with their drinks, and he and Blair are sitting together on the couch.

Todd: I really wanna make this work, Blair.
Blair: Well, Todd, what if it happens again? Next week, next month, when somebody whispers some rumors that they've dredged up about me?

Todd shifts on the couch so that he moves closer to Blair.

Todd: I'm -- I'm just thinking about now. I mean, you've gotta trust me, Blair.
Blair: I couldn't go through this again, Todd. Not after I've worked so hard.
Todd: You won't have to. Look, I know that all that you have right now is -- is my word. But I got a second chance once. Well, for everything. And when you get a second chance like that, you -- you do everything that you can to make it work.

Todd pauses.

Todd: You know what I wish?
Blair: What?
Todd: I wish that I had a gift for you. A present, you know? Like the present that you gave me at Christmas, remember?

At the mention of the first time they slept together, Blair smiles.

Todd: You'll never know what that meant to me, Blair. What it still does. And -- we got married because of that present. And then I thought maybe you took it back. You know, that present that was meant for me.

Todd, suddenly thinking that he's said too much, moves away from Blair on the couch.

Todd: Oh, man --
Blair: Todd --

Blair shifts closer to Todd and takes his hand in hers.

Blair: It turned out to be some present, huh?
Todd: I wanna make this work, you know? I mean, I'm gonna make this work. If you'll just give me -- if you'll just give me a chance. What do you say?

Blair moves closer to Todd, hugs him, then kisses his cheek softly.

Blair: I say yes.

Then she and Todd kiss.

--end scene--

When the scene returns, Todd and Blair are naked in bed together. Both look quite content.

Todd: Big day tomorrow.
Blair: Yeah. What time do you meet with the Lord estate trustees?
Todd: I don't know -- it's up to the lawyer. Sometime in the afternoon, I think. I don't know -- he's gotta check with that Vandenburg guy.
Blair: Hmm.
Todd: I'll go see McCabe first thing tomorrow morning.
Blair: You worried how, um, your new family's gonna react?
Todd: (tenderly) My family's right here.

Blair beams up at Todd.

Todd: As far as the rest of them go...look, Victor Lord's my old man...I got stuck with the genes, and I deserve compensation. I'm not gonna let anybody take anything from me, either. That includes the Lords. And the phony ones, too: David Vickers and Sam Vance.
Blair: (surprised to hear Sam's name) What about her?
Todd: Well, she's a great private detective. She'll turn up any minute now: "Gee, Todd, I found out you're the heir to 28 million dollars, and, uh, surprise, don't forget about my 5%! You signed a contract, remember?"

Blair does not like the sound of a single cent of the money going to the PI.

Blair: You know, Todd, I tell you what...why don't -- why don't I deal with Sam Vance? I mean, you've got a busy day. I'll talk to her.
Todd: What's to talk about? I signed the paper.
Blair: Oh, I guarantee, by the time I leave her office, she will have torn up that contract on her own free will.

Blair suddenly seems to think that maybe she needs to rationalize going after Sam Vance so harshly.

Blair: I mean, you don't want anyone else to benefit, other than your family from -- the inheritance, do you? I mean, it wouldn't be fair. I mean, to your -- your children.
Todd: (reassuringly) I'm gonna take care of you. Both of you. That's what I wanna do.
Blair: Well, that is what I want to hear.

Blair kisses Todd and then leans back on the pillow and plays with his hair.

--end scene--

When the scene returns, it's the middle of the night, and though Todd is asleep, Blair is awake. As his back is turned to her, she plays with his hair until he restlessly turns around and rests his head near her shoulder. She watches him sleep for a moment, and then she touches her stomach.

Blair: Soon.

Todd, restless in his sleep, tosses and turns back around so that his back is once again to Blair. She gazes at him.

Blair: Am I happy!

Now, Todd turns around one more time so that he's facing Blair in bed. They nestle their heads together as Blair finally settles in to join him in sleep.
