T&B Talk About Becoming Parents

It's the morning after Todd made Blair take the pregnancy test. Blair, still clad in her robe, is walking around the living room alone, with her hands over her stomach. It looks like the enormity of what's happened is finally starting to sink in -- she really is pregnant with Todd's baby. She takes a small sip of orange juice, then hastily puts it back down and walks over to the window. She stares out at the city of Llanview as Todd -- already dressed in a suit for his meeting with the men from the Lord estate -- walks into the room. Todd watches Blair, concerned, until the phone rings. When Blair makes no move to get the phone herself (in fact, she doesn't even appear to register that it's ringing), Todd goes to answer it instead.

Todd: Hello? Yeah, it's -- yeah, I'll be there. Right. Sure, I got the key that my -- well, that Peter Manning left me. Yeah, I'd be glad to meet with these Vandenburg guys and anybody else from the estate. Uh-huh. Sure, whenever you can set it up. I'm ready when they are. Okay. I'll see you soon.

Todd hangs the phone up and goes to stand behind Blair, who is still staring out the window.

Todd: Blair? You okay?
Blair: (shaking her head slightly)
Todd: Come on, talk to me. What's wrong?

Todd puts his hands on Blair's shoulders. At his touch, she turns around and hugs him tightly as she cries into his shoulder.

Blair: Oh, Todd....

--end scene--

Blair suddenly pulls away from Todd.

Blair: Todd, I --

She sighs sadly and rubs her face with her hand. Todd, seeing her distress, thinks he knows what's going on.

Todd: Look, I acted like a total jerk yesterday, and I let a bunch of idiots make me doubt that you were pregnant. I don't have a lot of practice at this "I'm sorry" stuff --
Blair: No, Todd, look, I understand how that happened.
Todd: It happened because I was a total jerk.
Blair: No! No, it didn't.

Blair walks away from the window and Todd follows after her.

Blair: It's -- you had a lot of pressure on you, like you said. And, besides, my history doesn't exactly instill confidence in people.
Todd: Yeah, but I believed Tina over you. And you're the one person in this town -- the one person probably in my life that has always been honest with me no matter what.

Because Blair's face is turned away from Todd, he can't see how she shuts her eyes guiltily here.

Blair: But I've done some -- I've done some really bad things. (she turns to face him) I told Asa that I was pregnant before. I mean, why wouldn't I do that same thing to you?
Todd: The point is that I should have known better.
Blair: Oh, God, Todd, all I've ever done in my life is -- is act on impulse and then run, scared. I'm just -- I'm afraid.
Todd: You've never been tied to one place. To one person.
Blair: And I'm not saying that that's a bad thing. It's just this pregnancy, my God, it's a -- it's a responsibility. It's huge.
Todd: Yeah, we'll handle it.
Blair: I mean it's not that I haven't had a lot of time to think about this. I'm -- oh, I just -- I'm just scared!
Todd: Look, you want this kid, right? That's what you said all along.
Blair: I do, Todd. Even more than I imagined. Oh, my God, I just -- I don't know what to do -- I don't know how to do this!

Blair sits down on the couch, laughing in disbelief. Todd quickly sits down next to her.

Todd: Well, let me tell you something, okay? You feed the kid at one end, you change it at the other, you flip it over, you pat it on the back. This is a piece of cake.
Blair: (amused) You know, you're not the total louse that you think that you are.
Todd: Yeah, well, don't tell anybody, all right? I got my rep to worry about.
Blair: Okay.

Blair pauses, thinking for a minute. The humor has passed and she's back to looking miserable.

Blair: I'm just -- I'm afraid that I -- I won't --
Todd: Blair?
Blair: (crying) Look, I was raised in -- in an orphanage. I don't know anything about this. I'm afraid.
Todd: I understand all that, but what are you so scared of?
Blair: Todd, that I won't be a good mother.

--end scene--

Todd: Look, maybe the raw deal you got growing up -- I think that that's gonna make you understand how you can be a better parent to our kid. (he stops himself and shivers) "Our kid" -- oh, God, you hear that? Ech!
Blair: (chuckling lightly) No. Todd, are you just saying that? Or are you trying to get me to stop crying over your nice suit?
Todd: (with faux outrage) You were crying on my suit?
Blair: Yeah.
Todd: Up there? (he gestures toward the window)
Blair: (giggling) Mm-hmm.
Todd: You know I've gotta go talk to this lawyer!

It's an adorable moment, but Todd turns serious again.

Todd: Look, I know you're going to be a good mother. I know that.
Blair: Why?
Todd: Because you know how much a mother's love means. Not to mention a father's.
Blair: (looking at Todd intently) Peter didn't give you much of a leg up, did he?

Todd stands up, as if trying to get away from the memories.

Todd: Hey, look, I got the most attention when I screwed up and -- and then -- God knows I got really good at doing that. At least now I understand why he always acted -- why he didn't want me around. Because he didn't.
Blair: Well, at least you had a good mother.
Todd: Oh, yeah. My mother was the only good thing in my life, 'till Peter Manning made her life so miserable that she turned and ran.

Todd suddenly seems to realize a new way to reassure Blair.

Todd: Look, Blair, you want to have this kid, right?
Blair: You know, I do, Todd, even more than I even imagined.
Todd: Well, look, if we both want to have this kid, and we're both gonna do everything we can to give this kid a good home, then it's not gonna have anything to worry about. None of the stuff we had to deal with. It's not gonna get put down or rejected. Besides, now that I'm a man of means, this kid's never gonna have to worry about money. (darkly) Unless the almighty Lords try and take it away.
Blair: (surprised) You think they really might fight you on your inheritance?

--end scene--

Todd walks away from the couch, his back to Blair.

Todd: The Lords can knock themselves out fighting me all they want. And so what if they won't accept me? The money's mine, not theirs.
Blair: Well, Todd, they might not see it that way.
Todd: That's tough luck, isn't it?
Blair: Oh, so you're gonna tell your new family to buzz off?
Todd: (turning to face Blair) Yeah, sure, why not? Look, it doesn't matter that we have blood in common, does it? Yeah, Marty and I have blood in common after that transfusion she gave me. Does that make her family?
Blair: Nope.

Blair stands up from the couch and goes over to Todd.

Blair: But don't you want to find out who your biological parents are -- what they were really like?
Todd: Sure I do. And then I'm gonna take their money. And we're gonna make our family, which is the only family that matters. Now, their name doesn't make us legitimate. Same with our kids.
Blair: (with faux regret) Oh, man, you mean we're not gonna be able to invite the Lord sisters over for tea anytime soon?
Todd: No, we won't.

Blair giggles, but Todd is deadly serious.

Todd: Look, Blair, I'm not fooling around here. We're gonna make up for all of the misery that was caused to us. And our kid is gonna have everything that we wanted but couldn't have. And they can get bent out of shape all they want -- Ms. Viki Perfect, Mr. Self-Righteous Cord. They're no better than you and me.
Blair: (giddy) You tell 'em!

With that out of the way, Todd is ready to turn his attention toward more important matters...

Todd: Now, about that dinner you were bragging about yesterday...I like chicken. You can roast it, leave the skin on, crispy. Mashed potatoes.
Blair: (smiling) You name it!
Todd: Yeah, we gotta eat hearty. We're going to war against the Lords -- and we're not taking any prisoners.
