T&B Make Love, Then Argue About Cord

Todd is on the bed in the penthouse, listening to Counting Crows' "Round Here" on the radio and looking over the list of questions Sam Vance gave him (a clue as to why David Vickers wanted him investigated) when Blair comes in. She's just returned from telling Cord that she's pregnant with Todd's baby; of course, Cord didn't react well, and now Blair is badly shaken up. But Todd's concentrating so hard on the David Vickers mystery that he doesn't notice just how ill at ease she is.

Todd: Blair! There you are, finally. Hey, I've got something to show you. You gotta look at this.
Blair: In a minute.

Todd gets off the bed and walks over to Blair, the list of questions in hand.

Todd: Look, you were right. I mean, I went to see Sam Vance, and she told me about David Vickers, and these are the questions that he needed help with. About me and my mother.
Blair: Did, um -- did she tell you why David needed those answers?
Todd: Well, she's going to find out. I -- I hired her.
Blair: Good. That's good.
Todd: Yeah, I'm really glad that you -- you pushed me into this. I don't think she's telling me everything, but I don't think she knows everything, either. But she's gonna find out, and she's really good. I mean, I know first-hand.

Todd breaks off when he realizes that Blair doesn't seem to be registering anything he's saying, even though going to see Sam Vance was her idea.

Todd: What is it? What's the matter? What, did something happen at St. Anne's with your mother?
Blair: (tearfully) Todd --
Todd: What?
Blair: Hold me. Please hold me.

Todd awkwardly holds his arms out and she falls into them, burying her face into his shoulder.

Blair: Like that. Like that.
Todd: What, did she have a relapse?
Blair: Something -- I -- I saw her, and -- I'm gonna be all right.
Todd: Sure.
Blair: Oh, Todd, I just -- I just need to forget. That's all.
Todd: Forget what?

But of course, Blair can't tell him anything, really -- not about Cord, not about her fake pregnancy. She looks at him and makes her decision.

Blair: Help me.
Todd: How?

Blair takes his face in her hands and kisses him. Todd kisses her back for a moment before trying to pull away.

Todd: Hey --

Blair: Todd...

Blair kisses him again, and again he gives in before pulling away a second time.

Todd: Hey, hey, hold up. What's going on here? What's the problem, Blair?

--end scene--

Blair doesn't answer Todd, so he prompts her again.

Todd: What?
Blair: "What"?
Todd: Well, you know what. What was that? What was that kiss?
Blair: Todd, you are my husband. I'm carrying your child. We're family now. I just did what I -- I felt, what I feel. I mean, is that okay with you?
Todd: Hey, look, I know all about doing things and feeling things and you don't know why. It's just 'cause you want to, 'cause you're angry.
Blair: It's lonely. I don't want to feel lonely anymore. And I don't have to. We're married.
Todd: Yeah, I know -- I was there.
Blair: And now you're here. Todd, we're both here.

Todd stares at Blair's mouth and then his eyes drop down to her stomach.

Todd: Yeah. We're all here.

Todd points at her stomach and then reaches his hand out for her to hold. She clasps it and then presses it against her stomach.

Blair: Todd. I just wanna be happy.

Todd takes a tentative step toward her, and after a moment, she takes a step back.

Todd: Come on. I just like looking.

Now, Todd kisses her once, then a second time.

Blair: Todd --
Todd: No, no, don't talk, all right? Just...be happy.

He kisses her a third time, then leads her over to the bed....

--end scene--

When the scene returns, we can see clothes scattered all over the floor, and Todd and Blair are naked and in bed together. Todd's head is up on the pillow by the headboard -- he looks quite content. Blair, on the other hand, is curled up with her head resting on Todd's stomach but with her face turned away from him. She looks deeply unhappy, unbeknownst to Todd.

Todd: Blair? You there?
Blair: I'm fine.
Todd: Me, too.

Todd traces his finger on her shoulder and plays with her hair.

Todd: Does that feel good?
Blair: What?
Todd: I said, "Does that feel good?"
Blair: I'm sleepy.

Todd abruptly pulls his hand away from her.

Todd: Blair, what are you thinking?

But Blair doesn't answer him.

--end scene--

Todd: So what are you thinking about, Blair?

Blair has a flashback to her earlier confrontation with Cord, in which he told her that never wanted to see her "twisted, beautiful face" ever again.

Todd: What, are you giving me the silent treatment?
Blair: I'm -- I'm sorry. I was just -- thinking about work.
Todd: (skeptically) Yeah, work, huh?
Blair: Yeah. With running off to Florida and getting married and everything, I just kind of let Melador slip by. So, um, I thought that I would stop by the Omega Building and see how the offices are coming along, and I thought if I -- if I leave now, then I'll --

Blair tries to get out of bed, but Todd stops her.

Todd: Hey, what's going on here?
Blair: I told you.
Todd: Yeah, I know you told me, but I don't buy it. A half hour ago, we were having sex, and now you're looking for any excuse you can find to get out of here.
Blair: That's not true.
Todd: Come on, Blair. You're the one person I could always count on to be honest with me. Just tell me -- what'd I do wrong?

--end scene--

Blair gets out of bed and slips into her robe.

Blair: Sorry -- what have you got to be sorry for? I can't even believe that would say anything like that.
Todd: Look, Blair, let's face it -- I mean, given my history, getting into bed with somebody that I -- I care about and trying to make 'em happy...? I'm worried about making the right moves and all that stuff. I don't know...
Blair: Todd, would you stop apologizing? Actually, when -- when it comes to making love, you're -- you're a wonderful lover.
Todd: Yeah, right afterwards you're suddenly a million miles away.
Blair: I told you about that. I just went to see Mother and, well, things didn't go so well.
Todd: So you're lying in bed and you're thinking about your mother?
Blair: You're acting like we've got some problems or something! We are fine -- we don't have any problems, Todd!
Todd: Well, you're either lying or you're blind.
Blair: What do you mean?
Todd: We got a big problem. His name's Cord Roberts.

--end scene--

When the scene returns, Todd's gotten out of bed and put on an undershirt.

Blair: Cord doesn't have anything to do with this!
Todd: Come on, Blair, this is me you're talking to. Now, we've always been straight with one another, and I'm telling you -- you got Cord on the brain.
Blair: Bull! When is the last time you even heard me talk about him?
Todd: I don't need to hear you talk about him. Come on, we both know that -- that you were crazy about him when we got married. Now, it doesn't take a genius to figure you still think about the guy.
Blair: Maybe I do --
Todd: No "maybe" about it. You're hung up on him.
Blair: God, you're acting like this is some problem. I --

Blair looks at Todd and then she decides to give up the act.

Blair: Okay. So I think about him every now and then. That's normal.

Todd looks at Blair suspiciously and stays silent.

Blair: Todd, I married you. I am committed to this marriage and making a family and a life for this baby.
Todd: And Cord's history? Give me a break.

Todd sits down on the bench by the bed and starts lacing up his shoes.

Blair: Cord was never there when I needed him. But you were, Todd. And even when I told you about the baby, you were there. You -- you came through with that. I mean, you could have said, "Too bad, Blair. Have a nice life." But, Todd, you stayed by me...and I'll always be grateful to you for that.
Todd: Okay, so you're going to build a marriage on gratitude? Lots of luck.
Blair: Todd...

Blair sits down on the bench next to him.

Blair: We're best friends. I care about you. (she puts a hand on his shoulder) And I know that we are gonna grow closer -- I'm sure of that.
Todd: It's very touching. You're wasting your breath.
Blair: What do you mean?
Todd: All right, come on. Let's just say -- all right, maybe we're okay together in the sack. But aside from that, this is nothing but a marriage of convenience. That's all it's ever gonna be.
Blair: I don't think so.
Todd: I do.

Todd gets up from the bench.

Blair: Todd --
Todd: Look, if there was no baby, we wouldn't be together now, would we?

--end scene--

Todd puts on his sweater -- he's still intent on going out.

Blair: Todd, will -- will you talk to me? Okay, look, I don't blame you -- things have been crazy the last few weeks for both of us. And if -- if there weren't a baby, would things be different? Maybe. But, Todd, this is the way things are, and -- and we'll just work through this. We'll deal with it together. For better or worse, remember?
Todd: (bitterly) How could I forget?
Blair: How did we let things get like this? I mean, just a while ago, we -- everything was working out fine. Maybe we could just pick up where we left off.
Todd: No, forget about it. Look, I got way too much on my mind to hang around here and do nothing. I'm going to go take a walk. I don't understand why that Sam Vance chick hasn't called -- let me know why David and Tina were checking up on me.

Of course, viewers know exactly why Sam Vance hasn't called him -- after he left her office, Tina showed up and threatened Sam with legal action if she told Todd anything about being the Lord heir. If and when Todd gets answers, it won't be from the PI.

Blair: Well, I -- I thought that you weren't putting any hopes in that.
Todd: No, I'm not. But she kept hinting that there probably was money in it for me. Look, if this thing turns out to be a bust, which it probably is, then I gotta get it out of my head and start figuring out how I'm going to make a living.
Blair: Well, I tell you what, why don't we just not think about that? I won't think about Melador, you don't think about that, and we'll just go catch a movie together.

Blair playfully tugs at Todd's jacket, but he rudely shrugs her away from him.

Todd: Why don't you give it a rest, huh? Quit jumping through hoops to try and make sure I'm okay. I can take care of myself.
Blair: Todd, look, I just -- I want this marriage to work! I really do!
Todd: Quit believing in miracles. We both knew what we were getting into when we said "I do." Now we just gotta live with it.
Blair: Todd --
Todd: I'm outta here. I'm gonna take a walk.
Blair: Todd!

Todd turns and leaves.

--end scene--

After Todd has gone, Blair looks at herself in the mirror and frets about her situation.

Blair: Todd is slipping away. I can't let that happen. I've got to find a way to hold on to him. If only it were true -- if only I were pregnant!
