Alex Gives T&B the Penthouse Keys

Todd and Blair are with Alex at the penthouse for the official handing over of the keys. They've just finished taking a walk around the upstairs, and now they are heading back downstairs, Alex leading the way and looking wistful.

Alex: It's hard to say goodbye. I had some wonderful times here.
Blair: I'll bet!
Alex: No sarcasm, please. Carlo and I were very happy here.
Todd: Look, Alex, we've signed the papers, you've already cashed the check, the lawyers have already taken their cut.... Officially, we own this place. So when do we get the keys?
Alex: Now.

Alex hands one set to Todd. Blair holds her hand out for the spare set.

Alex: There's your spare set.

But Alex "accidentally" misses Blair's hand, so the keys drop to the ground and Blair has to stoop to pick them up.

Alex: Oh! Whoops!
Blair: (sarcastically) Thank you. Well, I bet you Asa just had a fit when you told him that you sold the place to -- to us. (laughing)

But Alex goes silent.

Blair: Alex, you did tell Asa, didn't you?

--end scene--

Alex: Actually, I haven't had an opportunity to tell Asa that I've sold this place to you both.
Blair: Really? Well, may I suggest that you tell him, and tell him soon, because I know from bitter experience that what Asa doesn't know, he finds out, and then he makes you pay, and pay, and pay, and pay, and pay --
Alex: I wish you could understand that my relationship with Asa is entirely different than yours was with him, because we are always truthful with each other. And I would never do anything to hurt him.
Blair: Is that right?
Alex: Yes, it is. I would certainly never say that I was pregnant just to get --
Todd: (pissed) All right, you watch your mouth, Alex. I own this place, remember? You insult my wife again, and I'll throw you out of here so fast I won't even blink.
Alex: Todd. My goodness. This is just one man's wife telling one man's ex-wife that I'm having a wonderful relationship with her husband!
Blair: As long as you stay home and play wifey!
Alex: No, that's not true. I have a completely indepdent existance with Asa that he not only knows about, but supports! Which reminds me -- how would you two like to make a contribution to the community?

Alex has switched gears so fast that T&B are caught entirely off-guard.

Todd: What??
Alex: A contribution! To help other people! You see, I'm putting together a fund to build the finest cultural center in America! And I've found the perfect place for it -- in East Llanview, down by Angel Square. What we do with that area will astound you!
Todd: What's your problem, Alex? East Llanview is where you go if you want to buy drugs, not to go see some dumb ballet.
Alex: That's the point! It won't be that way once we build the cultural arts center! You see, we are going to gentrify the entire neighborhood. Because it's close to the highway, we're going to build an access road and that will mean that the -- that the -- well, the bad area will be torn down and -- and restructured.
Todd: Fine, whatever. Look, we don't want anything to do with your charity stuff.
Alex: Oh. (pause) Could I give you both a little advice?
Blair: (sarcastically) I can't wait! What?
Alex: Well, be generous. You can't just flash money and -- and fit into society and gain respectability. You have to earn it. You see, I -- I learned that. And philanthropy is a wonderful way -- a fast way -- to do that, because people admire philanthropy.
Blair: Maybe we don't want to be respectable.
Todd: Yeah. Maybe we like who we are.
Blair: Mm-hmm!
Todd: See, money can buy power. And that's the only thing that we care about.

Alex moves in for the kill.

Alex: Oh, I thought you were going to have a baby. You are going to have a baby, aren't you? What happens when you want to get that child into the right school? Or when that child is just dying to go to an important birthday party, but he doesn't get invited because of you? Respectability -- respectability is the key to happiness. I'd hate to think what you'd have to tell that little tear-stained face when he doesn't get included in community things because of you.

Todd and Blair have fallen silent. Alex, knowing she's hit a sore spot with them, is suddenly more cheerful.

Alex: Well, you might want to think about what I said. Gotta go! Bye-bye!

And with that, she breezes out of the penthouse. After she leaves, Todd and Blair exchange a meaningful look.

--end scene--

When the scene returns, Blair is telling Todd about her plans for the evening -- preparing for Melador business.

Blair: I've got a meeting with my staff tomorrow, all three of them, and I want to be prepared.
Todd: Prepared for what?
Blair: Well, I hired the best, but somehow I want to inspire them. I want to say, "This is where we're going, this is what we are, and this is how we are going to get there!"
Todd: (proudly) All right! You go, Blair.
Blair: Actually, marketing is gonna be pretty much of it the first year, and we only have two product lines -- nail polish and lipstick.
Todd: And there's lots of those in the drugstores.
Blair: I know. I know. But that's what is important -- we've gotta make a strong showing, and that's what marketing is about. You know, Todd, I just -- I can't believe that this is happening!
Todd: Why not?
Blair: Because this has been a dream of mine ever since I was a little bitty girl when I was living in the orphanage! I used to sneak off, all by myself, and I'd have these fantasies that I'd have a place all my own, where I would create these beautiful things, like clothes and jewelry and make-up.
Todd: Sounds like you had a knack for it right from the start. Drawing and stuff.
Blair: No way. Actually, it was a foster mom of mine, Selma, who took me under her wing. She worked in the garment industry, and she told me and taught me so much about form, color, beauty. She told me that I was going to be a success.

Blair walks away from Todd and goes to look out the window, lost in thought as she talks.

Blair: That I would be -- have a wonderful career in design or fashion. And, well, Todd, it actually wasn't until I was on my own and had the chance that I blew it. Somehow, I just kept blowing it. Frankly, over the past few years, I -- I didn't think it was ever going to work out. I just kept watching the dreams die.

Suddenly, Blair turns around to excitedly face Todd.

Blair: Oh, but Todd! You have given me such a wonderful chance here! I can't believe it, and I can't thank you enough! And I promise you -- I promise you that I will not ruin it this time. Promise.

She grabs him and hugs him.

Blair: Thank you so much. Thank you.

Todd allows her to hug him, but he seems kind of uncomfortable with the praise.

--end scene--

When the scene returns, Blair is finally pulling away from the hug, and Todd awkwardly tries to respond.

Todd: You know, don't -- don't go giving me all the credit. I mean, you know, you were -- you were building Melador long before you even started hanging out with me. All I did was give you the cash.
Blair: Todd, that is important to me! And I really, really want to make Melador work.
Todd: Well, then you will.
Blair: No, I won't. Not if I keep making stupid mistakes like trying to push Luna to sell her stupid Mud.
Todd: Hey, now, they took that personally. It's just business. Anyway, that -- that was my screw-up. My idea, remember?
Blair: Yeah, but Todd, I mean, she wound up in the hospital. I can't even believe that.
Todd: But that wasn't your fault.
Blair: Yes, it was, and I shouldn't have pushed her.

Blair spots a phone sitting on the stairs and has an idea.

Blair: Is this -- is this hooked up?
Todd: Yeah, I just made a call. Why?
Blair: I'm -- I'm gonna call, just -- just to see how she's doing. (she goes to grab the phone)
Todd: Listen to me, Blair. You're blaming yourself for what happened, and that's not right. If Luna hadn't gotten ticked off at you, she woulda gotten ticked off at somebody else -- her laundry didn't come back clean or something. She's a total weirdo.

Blair dials the number to the hospital anyway.

At the hospital, a nurse picks up.

Nurse: Llanview Hospital, emergency room.
Blair: Yes, I want to ask you about a patient that was just brought in there. Um, the condition of Luna Holden?
Nurse: Uh, yes, Ms. Holden's stable.

It's obviously very busy at the hospital. Someone off-screen interrupts the nurse on the phone with Blair.

Nurse: (to the other person) Yes, right away. (to Blair) Um, listen, we're really busy right now, but her friend's right here -- I'll let you fill -- let him fill you in.

The nurse hands the phone to a nearby Cord.

Cord: (into the phone) Hello. Who's this?

Blair seems shaken when she hears his voice.

Blair: Cord? It's Blair.

Even though Blair's back is turned to Todd, he can tell that she's affected by the prospect of talking to Cord, and he doesn't look happy.

--end scene--

Todd continues to look annoyed as Blair's phone call continues.

Blair: (on the phone, to Cord) I -- I'm surprised you're still there.
Cord: Well, we're all just kinda hanging out right now. We're gonna wait and see how she does on the medication, and if she's all right then I guess they're going to send her home.
Blair: Well, that's good, huh?
Cord: Yeah. Yeah, it is.

The nurse at the station taps Cord on the shoulder and gestures for him to hurry and finish the call.

Cord: (to Blair) Uh, look, they need this phone. Um, Luna is gonna be all right, Blair. You, uh, you don't need to worry.
Blair: Okay. Bye.

Blair hesitates slightly before hanging up the phone. When she turns around to see Todd, she puts on a cheery face and tone.

Blair: Oh, well, you know, you were right. It wasn't my fault -- she just had high blood pressure, and they're going to release her soon. So you were right, Todd.

But Todd doesn't say anything.

Blair: What's the matter?
Todd: Nothing.
Blair: Oh, yes there is. I mean, we're always honest with each other. What is it?
Todd: Cord still gets to you. I mean, you were just on the phone with him, and your whole body changed.
Blair: Are you --? No, it -- no, it didn't!
Todd: Blair, we're being honest here, remember? Look, relax. It's just something that I gotta learn to deal with, that's all. I mean, I knew where I stood when we got married.

Todd and Blair stare at each other awkwardly for a moment.

Todd: I gotta get out of here. (walking toward the door) I gotta go see this reporter. I'll see you later.
Blair: But Todd, I --

But Todd's out the door before she can finish her sentence.

--end scene--

When the scene returns, Blair is still at the penthouse, happily walking around the living room as she counts her blessings. First, she looks at some Melador papers.

Blair: My own company! (looking around the penthouse) My own home!

Suddenly, she grows quiet, and she touches her belly.

Blair: My baby.

She goes to sit on the penthouse stairs.

Blair: I've got it all.

She pauses and looks sad.

Blair: Oh, Cord...

She has a flashback to a kiss she and Cord shared several months ago. No matter how happy she is, Todd was right -- she can't shake her feelings for Cord Roberts.
