Asa Warns Todd About Blair

Asa is none too happy when Todd shows up at the door of his mansion.

Asa: What do you want?
Todd: The truth about your ex-wife.
Asa: (grimly) Come in.

Todd enters the mansion.

When the scene returns, Asa and Todd haven't gotten very far -- they're still in the foyer of the mansion.

Asa: I knew eventually you'd show up, Manning. Or is it Lord? Todd Lord?
Todd: Word gets around, huh?
Asa: Well, whatever rock you crawled out from under had to be a kind of a special rock, because it had a big vein of gold running through it.
Todd: More or less.
Asa: Tell me, how does Viki like having a murderer and a rapist for a brother? Viki with her nose in the air. (gleefully) Oh, I'd have given anything to see her face when she heard the good news.
Todd: I'm not here to talk about her. I'm here for some answers.
Asa: From me? You're looking for answers from me? You are in a fool's paradise, boy. (chuckles) Oh, you talk about gall. You almost destroyed my grandson -- now you want to play 20 Questions with me? You got Kevin charged with rape that you and your buddies pulled off, huh? He almost did time for it. Thanks to Ms. Saybrooke, who came out and set the record straight. And you want me to give you answers? I'd like to give you a swift kick in your butt. Now give me a reason why I shouldn't want to do that, huh?
Todd: Because you hate Blair more than you hate me.

Asa isn't about to object to this, of course.

Todd: Now I want the truth about my wife. You see, Mr. Buchanan, she's about to share in this golden rock that I just climbed out from under -- unless I put a stop to it. Or do you really want to see her rich?

For a moment, Asa doesn't answer.

Todd: Fine. I'm outta here. (he turns to leave)
Asa: Ah, hold it, Manning. Or whatever the hell I should call you.

Todd stops short of the door and turns back around to face Asa.

Asa: What exactly do you want to know?

--end scene--

Todd: So I heard when you and Blair were married, she pretended to be pregnant.
Asa: Who the hell told you that?
Todd: Never mind that. How'd it happen?
Asa: Are you telling me...? (with realization) Oh, I love it! I -- I love it!
Todd: Fine. Are you gonna answer me or not?
Asa: Ooh, yeah, sure -- I'm gonna tell you that! That woman's a witch if there ever was a witch. And even a low-life like you deserves to know what he got hitched to.
Todd: So she did claim to be pregnant?
Asa: Yes, yes, she claimed she was pregnant. But she was about as pregnant as you and me.
Todd: Well, then how'd she make you believe it?
Asa: She bribed a doctor. She was going to fake a miscarriage. But the poor thing fell, didn't have a chance. She ended up in the hospital, and Larry Wolek called her on her "delicate situation," which he knew wasn't so delicate.
Todd: So that's how you found out?
Asa: Well, kind of. I mean, I was on the trail.
Todd: Look, if she wasn't pregnant...
Asa: Well, she claimed that she really thought she was pregnant. She'd had, uh, what they call a "hysterical pregnancy."
Todd: And you believed that?

Asa gets a touch defensive.

Asa: That woman looked so fragile and hurt and so needy -- that I swore it was the truth on the Gospel. So, like a damn fool, I decided to take care of her and nurse her back to health.
Todd: But you found out eventually.
Asa: Oh, yeah. I sure did.
Todd: How?
Asa: I made a mistake. I let Dorian take Blair's mother, Addie, to St. Anne's. Have you met the mother?
Todd: Mm-mm.
Asa: Ms. Looney Tunes. This is not a snake pit. St. Anne's is one of the best places there is. All of a sudden, this Blair is calling me "hideous," "ill-feeling," "an old monster"! And she lit into me like there was no tomorrow! Told me she lied to me, couldn't stand the sight of me! And kept digging at me and digging at me! Finally, the ticker gave out. I fell down like a sack of bricks.
Todd: You had a heart attack.
Asa: Right at her feet...my heart pills a foot away. Did she give 'em to me?
Todd: I don't know.
Asa: No. She stood there. That witch stood there and watched and finally walked away, hoping I'd die.

Todd goes to leave, but Asa isn't finished.

Asa: Oh, one other thing. Pregnant or not -- I'll bet every dime I got that it's anything but. But Blair Daimler doesn't care diddly about you. Like she didn't care about Cord or me. Besides caring for that loco mother, the only thing in this world that woman cares about is Blair Daimler. And be certain of this -- absolutely certain -- that witch is gonna take you for one expensive ride, sucker. One expensive ride.

--end scene--

The next scene finds Todd at the local pharmacy. He quietly walks in, startling the clerk at the counter.

Clerk: Oh, you startled me -- I didn't hear you come in. Can I help you?
Todd: Yeah, I think maybe you can.
