Blair and Luna Clash Over "Miracle Mud"
Blair arrives at the country club accompanied by Robynn, a potential marketing advisor for Melador. Unfortunately, Cord, Max, and Luna are also all there for dinner. Blair makes eye contact with Cord but quickly turns her attention back to Robynn.
Blair: Robynn, um, let's sit over here, shall we? (gesturing to a table further away from Max and Luna's)
Blair and Robynn sit at the table.
Blair: So, what'll you have?
Robynn: Oh, I don't drink, thanks.
Blair: Well, I could sure use one...
Robynn: Aren't you pregnant?
Blair: (as if suddenly remembering) Yes, I am. Uh, could you handle a seltzer?
Robynn: Oh, one's my limit.
Blair: All right.
A waiter approaches the table.
Waiter: Hello, ladies.
Blair: Hello, we would like two seltzers, please, on the rocks.
Waiter: You got it. (leaves)
Blair: Robynn, I am so impressed with your credentials, but tell me more about your strategy for Melador's marketing.
Robynn: Well, when you're putting out a new, uh, product --
Blair: Uh-huh?
Robynn: -- especially when you're a new company like Melador, the key always is saturation.
Blair: As in "bombing"?
Robynn: (chuckling) Exactly. You're starting from a zero market share, so you've got to find some way to earn shelf space from the retailers.
Blair: Mm-hmm.
Robynn: But saturating the market with, uh, ads and promotions can be very expensive.
Blair: (ruefully) Tell me about it.
Robynn: Well, that's why I'd suggest just staying in the Northeast for six months or so.
The waiter brings them their drinks.
Robynn: (to the waiter) Thank you. (to Blair) Plenty of time for Melador to go national -- time to work out the kinks. That way, we sink the big bucks into local advertising, which is where you get the best value.
Blair: Well, it sounds smart. Actually, I like everything that you've said so far.
Robynn: Well, I'd really like a crack at helping you make Melador a success.
Blair: Well, Robynn... (extending her hand) I think you're gonna get your chance.
Robynn: (shaking her hand) Oh, thank you!
Blair: You're welcome! (toasting her) And here's to your new job.
Robynn: And to Melador!
Blair: Yes.
As they both take sips from their drinks, Robynn becomes distracted -- she is looking over at Luna's table.
Robynn: I swear I know that woman. The one you were staring at when we came in. She's familiar to me, too.
Blair: (trying to change the subject) Uh, when do you propose that start-up date for the new Melador magazine campaign?
Robynn: (finally recognizing Luna) Moody! Luna Moody from the radio show. Oh, and she owns that spa -- she and her husband -- Serenity Springs?
Blair: Yeah, that's the one.
Robynn: They have an amazing facial mask! I mean, "Miracle" something --
Blair: Mud.
Robynn: Yeah!
Blair: Miracle Mud.
Robynn: You know, that is the perfect product to launch the Melador skin line!
Blair: You really think?
Robynn: Oh, haven't you used it? Someone gave me a jar. It is positively amazing!
Blair: (nodding intently) Well, I -- I guess you do have a point, actually.
Before Blair's meeting with Robynn, Todd suggested the same thing to Blair -- that she offer to buy Miracle Mud from Luna, Max, and Cord. Now that she's hearing the same thing from Robynn, Blair decides to act. She quickly gets out of her chair, much to Robynn's surprise.
Robynn: (confused) Point? What -- where are you going?
Blair: I'm gonna have a few words with my competition over here. This was my husband's idea. Let's see if it works, okay?
Blair starts walking over to Luna, Max, and Cord's table. Luna is incredulous as she sees Blair approach.
Luna: Is she gonna actually come over here?
Cord: (attempting to leave) I will see you two later -- excuse me...
But he's stopped by Blair's arrival at the table.
Blair: Cord, please, don't go. Not yet. I have a proposition for you. Actually, for all of you!
Max: We'll pass.
Blair: Come on, Max, you haven't even heard my offer yet.
Cord: What is it, Blair?
Blair: Well, on behalf of my new company, I'd like to make an offer. I would like to buy out your entire Serenity Springs health and beauty product line.
Luna, Max, and Cord are all stunned into silence.
--end scene--
Luna: (laughing in disbelief) Are -- you can't be serious. You want to buy us out?
Max: This is a joke, right?
Blair: No, Max, this is business.
Luna: Well, of all the standing gall!
Luna jumps to her feet and so does Max.
Blair: I know that you guys just sell your product in the spa to your -- your customers in the lobby, but something as wonderful as Miracle Mud shouldn't be limited to such a small market.
Luna: (to Max) What is she trying to pull?
Blair: (in a tight voice, struggling to keep calm and friendly) Luna, if you would just listen. I know that Serenity Springs doesn't have the marketing or distribution capabilities to take it nationwide. But Melador does.
Luna: (sarcastically) Well, good for Melador!
Blair: And if -- and if you sell to me, I can guarantee you --
Max: We are not interested.
Blair: Max, just hear me out, please --
Max: We don't need to. We would never even consider doing business with you.
Blair: Well, I can't believe you guys would keep your personal feelings for me from at least hearing what I have to say to you.
Cord comes forward and steps closer to Blair.
Cord: (softly) Let it go, Blair. Please?
Luna: I can't believe you've got the nerve to come over here after everything you've done.
Blair: Well, excuse me, Luna. I thought you were the one that said that you were past that.
Max: Beat it, Blair.
Blair: No, Max, not until you at least hear my price. I am willing to pay twice what your product line is worth!
Luna: I don't care! Get your own mud! You ought to have plenty -- I never saw you when you weren't down in the dirt, wallowing in it!
Blair is stunned into silence. Max and Cord stay silent, too.
--end scene--
Blair: Can't we be professionals about this?
Luna: (yelling) Why don't you and your rich husband take your fancy business deal and get out of town!
Blair is through trying to play nice.
Blair: Well, St. Luna, we are here to stay. So get used to it.
Luna: Oh --
Cord: Blair, leave it alone!
Max: Just leave.
Blair: You know, I don't -- I don't believe this! Luna here causes a scene again, and I'm --
Luna: Oh, yeah!
Blair: I just came to offer a legitimate business deal for you guys!
Luna: Yeah, I told you what you could do with it, too, didn't I?? Uh-huh!
Max: (holding onto Luna's arms) Luna, Luna, Luna, Luna, Luna, just calm down -- (to Blair) Would you go??
Blair: Fine!
Blair starts walking away, but Luna can't let it go yet and starts screaming after Blair.
Luna: Yeah, and you know what?? Don't you ever try to get a piece of anything that belongs to me again! Not -- not Max, not Serenity Springs, and not Cord! I don't -- in fact, I don't want to ever see your face again! How about that?? I don't want to ever --
Max: Calm down --
Suddenly, Luna stops talking and looks disoriented. Max looks at her in concern.
Max: Luna, what is it? What is it? Sweetheart, what is it?
Cord: Luna!
Luna faints in Max's arms as Blair watches.
--end scene--
When the scene returns, Luna is still unconscious, and Max and Cord have pulled her over to a chair and are trying to wake her up as Blair hovers anxiously nearby.
Max: Quick, somebody call an ambulance!
Cord: I got it!
As Cord dashes off to call for paramedics, Blair stoops down closer to Max and Luna.
Max: Luna, come on. Can you hear me, baby? Can you hear me? Come on.
Blair: Max, is there anything that I --
Max: (yelling) Would you get away from her?
Blair: Max, I never meant for this to happen --
Max: I said get away from her, now! Come on, Luna, just -- can you hear me? It's Max. Can you hear me, baby? Please. Please hear me. Please.
--end scene--
Luna is still unconscious, and Max is trying to get her to revive her -- but it's no use.
Max: (to Luna) Come on, Luna, please. Please. All you gotta do -- all you gotta do is wake up, huh? Just wake up, please. Just open your eyes. Baby, come on. Come on, please. Just wake up.
The maitre d' comes over to Max with a cold compress.
Maitre d': Mr. Roberts is calling an ambulance, Mr. Holden. (handing the compress to Max) One of the waiters thought perhaps this might help.
Max: Great, thank you, thank you very much. (putting the compress on Luna's forehead) Luna, can you feel that?
Maitre d': Is there anything we can do?
Max: No. No, she's got a heart-beat, she's breathing, but she's fainted.
Cord runs back to the dining room and over to Luna's side.
Cord: Any change?
Max: No, it's like she's not here...
Cord: Hang in there, Max, hang in there. The ambulance is on its way.
Max: We can't wait -- I got to get her to the hospital. (to the maitre d') Can you give me a hand here?
Maitre d': Let me help you, sir... (he goes to help pick up Luna)
Max: Please, be very careful. Be very careful. Thanks.
The maitre d' and Max rush Luna out of the dining room. Cord is about to follow, but Blair, now crying, stops him.
Blair: I'm so sorry, Cord! Wait, please! You've got to know that this -- I never meant for this to happen!
Cord: Look, I gotta go, I gotta be with Max -- he's in no condition to drive right now!
Blair: But, Cord, I just --
Cord: Blair, please!
Cord runs out of the dining room after Max. Blair is about to dissolve into a puddle of tears when Robynn comes rushing over to her.
Blair: Oh, man!
Robynn: What was that all about? Is she okay?
Blair: (trying to compose herself) I don't know, she -- they're taking her to the hospital.
Robynn: I saw, but -- I mean, how did it happen?
Blair: I don't know! I was just -- I came over here, I was talking to them, and she got very upset. She started yelling, and then she -- she collapsed!
Robynn: Does she have a heart condition or anything?
Blair: No. (suddenly crying again) She's eight months pregnant.
Robynn: Oh, my God. I hope she's okay, and the baby --
Blair: Oh, God! Look, Robynn, I will call you, and we will reschedule. I've got to get to the hospital and find out about Luna. But thank you so much!
Blair rushes out of the dining room.
--end scene--
When Blair arrives at the hospital, Max and Cord are waiting anxiously outside oen of the rooms while a doctor examines Luna. Blair rushes over to them.
Blair: Max, how -- how's Luna? Is she doing all right?
Max immediately becomes enraged at the sight of Blair.
Max: Oh, for God's sake! Get away from here!
Blair: Max, I just want to see and make sure she's all right!
Max: Why? Just like you did a year ago when you came to the hospital after you ran her over with a truck??
Blair: Max!
Max: Come on, one more time! One more time, Blair! It's your fault she's in there! Now I'm gonna tell you one more time -- go away! Now!
Blair is stunned into silence as she looks at Max with tears in her eyes. Cord, standing just behind Blair, also stays silent.
--end scene--
Max: My pregnant wife is in there unconscious, and it's your fault!
Blair: How can you say that to me? How can you blame me for what happened to Luna??
Max: Easy! You got her so upset, she lost consciousness and collapsed!
Blair: Max! Max: Now you're here 'cause you feel guilty!
Blair: I would never even have said anything to her if I'd known that something like this was going to happen! I didn't even know she was having a problem with her pregnancy! I would never have said anything --
Max: Oh, just save it, Blair! No matter how you twist it, it's your fault! So get out of my face!
Blair: (crying) Max!
Cord finally tries to intervene.
Cord: Max, will you take it easy? Look, all this hollering, all this yelling, is not gonna accomplish anything. What you got to do right now is you've got to focus on Luna and those twins and getting them through this!
Max: (sarcastically) Oh, yeah, and Luna's not having a problem with her pregnancy, and everything would be fine if Blair weren't around.
Cord: Max, you're wrong about that. Luna is not in the hospital now because of Blair. It is not her fault.
Blair listens silently as Cord speaks -- she seems moved that he's defending her.
Cord: Yes, Luna did get upset when Blair came over and made that proposition to buy out part of Serenity Springs. But Luna is here because she had another problem, remember? She was dizzy before. There is a bigger problem here, and the doctor is trying to look to it right now. It is not Blair's fault. You can't blame her entirely for this.
Suddenly, the doctor comes out of the room.
Doctor: Mr. Holden?
Max: (rushing over to the doctor) What -- what is it, doctor?
Doctor: She's awake now.
Max: Is she okay?
Doctor: She's asking for you.
Max quickly goes into the room with the doctor to see Luna. After he leaves, Blair turns to look at Cord, obviously grateful to him for what he said. But he just stares stonily at her and says nothing.
--end scene--
As Max visits with Luna in the hospital room, the doctor goes out to see Cord and Blair.
Doctor: So Mrs. Holden and the twins will be fine.
Cord: Oh! Great. What a relief.
Blair: Yes, it is.
Doctor: Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got to see a patient.
Blair: Thank you.
Cord: Thanks.
After the doctor leaves, the mood between Blair and Cord turns awkward, as it usually does these days when they are alone together.
Cord: Well, that's great news.
Blair: Yes, it is. (she pauses) No matter what Max thinks, I never meant for anything like this to happen to Luna or her babies -- the twins.
Cord nods and sighs, avoiding looking at her.
Blair: I mean, now that I've got a life growing inside of me, I -- I just don't know what I'd do if anything happened to my baby.
Cord: Yeah. I'm gonna go see how Luna's doing. (he goes past her to leave)
Blair: Cord, wait --
Blair grasps Cord's hand to stop him from going, and he turns and looks at her.
--end scene--
Blair: I just want to say thank you -- so much.
Cord drops Blair's hand.
Cord: You don't have to thank me, Blair.
Blair: Yes, I do, Cord. You stood up to Max for me, and I appreciate that.
Cord: Look, I wouldn't think a whole lot about that, Blair. It's not like I was doing you some kind of a big favor or anything. I was just looking to Max -- that's all.
Blair: I know. But I also know that you're -- you're angry with me about everything, and -- well, no matter what's going on between us, you couldn't let Max blame me for something that wasn't my fault, and I appreciate that. Thank you.
Blair starts to walk away, then comes back and tenderly kisses Cord on the cheek. She lingers a moment, then goes to the elevator. As she waits, she stares sadly at Cord -- but he keeps his back turned to her. The elevator arrives, Blair gets in, and as soon as the door closes she starts crying again.
