Blair Tells Addie About Her Fake Pregnancy

Blair is back at St. Anne's visiting Addie. She's just returned from Key West, where she tracked down Todd and lied to him about being pregnant with his child, as part of her plan to get Todd to marry her before he learns about his Lord trust fund.

Blair: Hey, Mama. It's me, Blair. I just got back from Florida. It's so warm and nice down there. But you know what? I missed you so much, and that's why I came back. (handing Addie a package) Here, I brought you a present. Open it up.

Addie opens the box; inside is a beautiful coral necklace.

Blair: Like it? Look, it's pink coral. It goes with your outfit. It comes from the ocean. Mama, are you glad to see me?
Addie: You never said anything about Florida. You said you were going to go find that young man, the one you call Todd.
Blair: Yes, that's what I said --
Addie: Even though you love Cord, you said you wanted to marry Todd. You said it was very important.
Blair: Yes, it is, and that's what I said.
Addie: So why did you go to the ocean?
Blair: Mama, listen to me here -- look at me. I went to the ocean. I went down to Florida, because that is where Todd is. And I found him and I talked to him. Mama, do you understand that?
Addie: Yes or no?
Blair: Yes or no what?
Addie: Are you getting married?
Blair: Well, that is a little complicated --
Addie: Why?
Blair: Well, I -- I gave it my best shot, and we'll just have to see if it was good enough.
Addie: When will you know?
Blair: Very soon, I hope. If everything works as I have planned it, I could be Mrs. Todd Manning very soon.

--end scene--

Addie: So did you ask Todd to marry you?
Blair: No, Mama, I -- I never suggested that we marry.
Addie: You know, honey, I think you're a little confused.
Blair: No, Mama, actually, I'm being very smart here. I have learned the hard way that when it comes to men, you have to use just a little finesse.
Addie: I know what finesse is.
Blair: I know you do.
Addie: Did you tell him about the money? All those millions of dollars he's going to inherit? Did you finesse that, too?
Blair: Mama, I -- I fully intend to tell Todd about his inheritance, but after we're married. Before we say "I do," it just wouldn't be fair to him, would it?
Addie: It wouldn't be fair to him?
Blair: To Todd? Of course not. Mama, he would think that I was marrying him for his money.
Addie: But that's what you're doing. Isn't that what you're doing?
Blair: No, Mama, I'm -- I'm doing it because -- I'm doing it because of the things that I have to do. I'll tell you what, let's --

Blair gets up off the bench they're sitting on and goes to put Addie's necklace on her.

Addie: For your new company -- the one you named after me and Dorrie and Melinda.
Blair: Yes, for the new company -- Melador. Because it takes a lot of money, Mama, to get that business started up. The necklace looks very pretty on you. But, Mama, I want to take care of you. And with Dorian away -- Mama, I'm just afraid they'll make you leave St. Anne's. And I don't want that.
Addie: So you're marrying Todd for the money.
Blair: Yes. But Todd is my friend, and I am his friend. He said that. He says that I'm his only friend.
Addie: I know why you want to marry him. But if you want to be just friends, will he want to marry you?
Blair: Can you keep a secret?
Addie: (delighted) Of course! Of course I can! You ask any of the sisters.
Blair: Okay, but you can't tell anyone, you promise? Okay. I told Todd that I'm pregnant.

Addie is thrilled; she immediately hugs Blair.

Addie: Oh, Blair! Blair! Oh my God!
Blair: Mama, wait, wait, wait, wait. What I mean is -- no, no, no, Mama, Mama. I told Todd a fib. The truth is, there is no child.
Addie: You're not?
Blair: No, no, Mama. But see, it's important for Todd to think that there's a child, and I also told him that I'm going to get back together with Cord and make Cord believe his child is his.
Addie: There's no baby?
Blair: Shh, Mama, I know that, you know that, but Todd doesn't. See, the point is, that if Todd thinks that I am going to marry another man and pass off his child as Cord's child, well, that is the one thing that may be able to get him to marry me. Todd was given away by his own birth parents. And I feel certain that he won't be able to walk away from his own child. That's what I'm counting on, anyway. Do you -- do you understand that?
Addie: Not really. But there's still one thing you haven't told me about. If Todd asks you to marry him, then where does that leave Cord? The one you still love?

--end scene--

When the scene returns, Blair tries to play it cool.

Blair: I'm -- I'm over Cord, Mama.
Addie: That's not what you said the other day.
Blair: Well, the other day, he was available.
Addie: What can happen in a day?
Blair: His ex-wife. She told me herself that they'd gotten back together.
Addie: What did she say?
Blair: Mama, it doesn't matter what she said, all right? She's his wife. Ex-wife, whatever. The fact is, their flame has been rekindled, and Cord, I guess, just couldn't help himself. For heaven's sake, he's married the woman three times already.
Addie: It's just supposed to happen once.
Blair: Yeah, well, they keep breaking up.

Blair gets up from the bench and starts pacing back and forth.

Blair: I guess he -- he really loves her. Deep down, he really, really loves her.
Addie: So now you can't love Cord anymore?
Blair: Mama, of course I still love Cord. Sometimes I think that I love him so much -- never mind.

Blair sits back down on the bench with Addie.

Blair: You know what, Mama, it doesn't matter what I think or what I feel because I'm not in the picture anymore. I mean, it's just a thing with me. Seems like everytime I -- I meet somebody, I fall in love with them, they love me, everything -- everything just gets really screwed up.
Addie: (stroking Blair's hair) I'm sorry, sweetheart.
Blair: Mama, don't you feel sorry for me, all right? Because this is a mistake that I made again.
Addie: You made you and Cord sound like a fairy tale.
Blair: Yeah, and we all know how they end up, don't we?
Addie: Happily ever after?
Blair: Grandma gets eaten by the wolf, Cinderella cuts her foot on the slipper, and Sleeping Beauty never wakes up.
Addie: No, that's not true!
Blair: No, Mama -- Mama, it is true. So no more fantasies, all right? About Cord, Max, or Prince Charming. Because Todd -- Todd Manning, he is real. And so is his money. And when I marry him, I will have the security that I need, Mama.
Addie: What about love, Blair?
Blair: Mama, love -- love is the biggest fairy tale of all. Love does not buy security.

Blair stands up to leave, and Addie freaks out.

Addie: Where are you going?? Are you going away so soon?
Blair: No, Mama, Mama, Mama, shh. No, I'm just going to make sure that no one -- no one tells Todd about his inheritance until I'm ready for him to know it.
Addie: Who can tell him? I thought it was our secret.
Blair: Well, it is, Mama, but the only people who know about it are Aunt Dorian and David Vickers. And fortunately, they're out of town.
Addie: So your plan is still safe, isn't it?
Blair: Well, I did get a message from cousin Cassie, and she may have information if her mother's coming back to town.
Addie: Blair, you worry me. All these schemes -- they always get you into trouble. And what if -- what if it doesn't -- what if all this doesn't work out?
Blair: Mama, shh! Don't say that. Now, Mama, don't you even think that. Because this plan is going to work. It has to!
