Blair Visits Addie And Hatches Her Plan To Snag Todd's Money

Blair has arrived at St. Anne's Hospital to visit her mother, Addie Cramer. Addie is sweet and kind, but she's also mentally ill, and has been for years. Blair and Addie have both been fortunate that Dorian has been able to pay for Addie to receive care at St. Anne's.

Now, waiting for Addie, Blair (carrying a beautiful bunch of flowers for her mother) paces the room until she is joined by one of the nuns, Sister Theresa, who is accompanied by a nurse.

Sister Theresa: Ah, we were expecting you, Miss Daimler. (to nurse) You may go get Addie.
Blair: Thank you. How is she today?
Sister Theresa: Today's been a good day.
Blair: Oh, she's having more of those these days, isn't she?
Sister Theresa: Oh, yes. She's made remarkable progress in the last few months.

Blair is absolutely overjoyed.

Blair: Oh, that's so great! You know, I think that it is this place. She seems so happy here, I can't think of any place else I'd rather her be!
Sister Theresa: We only hope that she won't have to leave us anytime soon.

Blair is surprised at these words and the Sister Theresa's serious tone of voice.

Blair: What -- what are you saying?
Sister Theresa: Oh, I had planned to address this matter later, at the end of your --
Blair: (alarmed) What is it? Is she -- is she sick or something?
Sister Theresa: Oh, no! Addie's health is very good considering her condition.
Blair: So what is it then?
Sister Theresa: There have been, um, financial complications.
Blair: What?? My aunt Dorian is supposed to take care of this bill.
Sister Theresa: Until recently, she has. But she's nearly thirty days in arrears with last month's bill, and she's already missed this month's deadline.
Blair: I'm sorry, but there must be some mistake here!
Sister Theresa: I've tried to contact your aunt to no avail. Apparently, she's out of town.

Blair knows about this; her cousin Cassie recently informed her that Dorian had suddenly gone missing. At the time, Blair had chalked Dorian's disappearance up to "Dorian being Dorian," running away from some problem. Now, though, whatever Dorian's problem is, it's affecting Addie.

Blair: (muttering to herself) No telling when she's going to be back.
Sister Theresa: As much as we love Addie, we can't afford to keep her here indefinitely.
Blair: Are -- are you saying that she's going to have to leave?
Sister Theresa: Of course, that's the last thing that we would want. But we do have our own financial situation to --
Blair: I -- I understand that, but there's no way I'm going to let my mother stay in some -- are you going to put her in some state institution??

At the thought of Addie ending up in an asylum, Blair is panic-stricken. It's taken her years to be able to get Addie into a place where she could be properly loved and cared for, and now suddenly it's slipping away.

Sister Theresa: Perhaps you can help with the bill.
Blair: I'm doing everything I can to keep myself afloat!
Sister Theresa: I see.
Blair: You know, maybe -- wait a minute, maybe I can, uh, cover a few months, or something....
Sister Theresa: Perhaps that would give you time to make other arrangements.
Blair: Look, I will figure something out. I can't let my mother leave here!

Suddenly, the nurse brings Addie into the room. Blair's desperation turns to joy as Addie runs to hug her.

Addie: Blair!
Blair: Oh, Mama! Oh, Mama -- you look wonderful! (hugging Addie to her tightly) Oh, Mother, everything's gonna work out! It's gonna work out. It will...don't you worry. Don't you worry.

When the scene returns, Blair and Addie are having their visit, and Blair shows Addie the flower she brought.

Blair: I thought these flowers would brighten up your room, Mama.
Addie: I have something for you, too.
Blair: You do?

Addie hands Blair a handmade keychain.

Addie: It's a key ring.
Blair: Oh, Mom, it's beautiful! Did you make this? I like it.
Addie: Now you will remember me.
Blair: (emotionally) I always keep you in my heart, Mama.
Addie: Good.
Blair: You know, I would ask you to come work for me at Melador, but I can see that they are keeping you very busy here!
Addie: I like it.
Blair: I know that you do. I know that you're happy. It makes me so happy that you're happy.
Addie: Yes. But you're not happy, Blair.
Blair: Me? Mother, I'm fine. I'm fine.
Addie: You don't talk about Cord this time.
Blair: (looking down) Yeah, well, Cord and I didn't -- well, we're finished. It didn't work out, that's all.
Addie: But you love Cord!
Blair: Yeah, I -- I do. But, Mama, he -- he just -- he didn't love me. Not enough, anyway. And he was more interested in saving his ex-wife than just being with me.
Addie: Like Max.
Blair: Yeah, like Max. Mama, you know what? I've learned a lesson -- that I'm not going to fall for anyone ever again who doesn't put me first.
Addie: You miss Cord.
Blair: I can't miss him, Mama. I can't let myself do that. I've got Melador right now to take care of. And other things.
Addie: You need money?
Blair: It takes a lot of money to start things up, as well as other things that I need to take care of. See, Mama, actually, to tell you the truth, Cord was going to help me out financially. But I'm going to take care of that one on my own now.
Addie: Dorrie?
Blair: Dorian, yes, she wrote me a big check the other night. But it's getting smaller by the minute. Funny thing is that I have a -- I have a friend who's sitting on more money than he could ever need, and he doesn't even know it yet.

--end scene--

When the scene returns, Sister Theresa returns to the room.

Sister Theresa: (to Addie) Did you show her your painting?
Addie: Blair said I have talent!
Sister Theresa: And she's right.

Blair and Addie hug.

Addie: Blair has talent, too!
Blair: Thank you, Mama.
Sister Theresa: She probably gets it from you. Shall I come up later, find you for dinner? They're making your favorite.
Addie: (joyfully) Yes! Find me!
Sister Theresa: (to Blair) I'll see you before you leave.
Blair: Thank you, Sister.

Sister Theresa turns to leave and Addie becomes distressed.

Addie: Come back!
Sister Theresa: I will.

With that, she leaves the room. Blair smiles at Addie.

Blair: She likes you very much, Mama.
Addie: She's so good to me. So good.
Blair: Well, you deserve it. They better be good to you.
Addie: I don't ever want to leave this place, ever. Do I have to? Do I?
Blair: No, shh, no, Mama. Don't you -- don't you worry about a thing. I will figure a way for you to stay here and take care of Melador, too. But tell you what, right now I've got to get going --
Addie: (alarmed) No!
Blair: Mama, I'm going to come back, okay? I'm going to be back.
Addie: Promise?
Blair: I promise you.
Addie: Maybe your friend can help you?
Blair: (confused) My friend?
Addie: The one who's sitting on all that money.
Blair: You mean Todd? No, Mama, I don't think Todd is the answer to my problems. I --

Suddenly, Blair is hit with a realization. We can practically see the gears in her mind moving.

Blair: Or maybe he is...!

--end scene--

Addie: What -- what is it, Blair? What's wrong?
Blair: Oh, Mother, nothing! In fact -- in fact everything is right!
Addie: It is?
Blair: Yes, it is! I know I can get Todd to give me the money, and I know exactly -- exactly how I'm going to get him to do it!
Addie: How?
Blair: Simple. I'll marry him.
Addie: (horrified) What??
Blair: Yeah! I'll marry Todd and that way everything that is mine is his, right?
Addie: Yes, well, I guess so --
Blair: And everything that is his is mine, including that big, fat inheritance, Mama, and I have you -- you! -- to thank for this great idea!

Blair hugs Addie joyfully.

Addie: I never meant for you to marry him. I just thought you could ask him for the money.
Blair: Well, I could. That doesn't mean he's going to give it to me.
Addie: But he's your friend.
Blair: Mother, you don't have any idea how the real world works. Sometimes you can't count on your friends, even when they claim to be there for you. No. If I'm going to get the money from Todd, I'll need to marry him first, and then I'll tell him the good news about the inheritance, and when we're married, we'll share everything -- whether he likes it or not.
Addie: But if Todd is your friend, how can you trick him like that?

Blair doesn't have a defense for that.

--end scene--

Addie: You don't want to hurt your friend Todd, do you?
Blair: Mama, of course I don't want to hurt him.
Addie: But he would feel bad if you tricked him into marrying you.
Blair: Mama --
Addie: Just so -- just so you could get his money.
Blair: Okay, look, he is my friend, and maybe he's the only friend that I've got. I could tell him about the money...
Addie: I bet he'd like that!
Blair: Yeah, but would he like it enough to give me a big chunk of his inheritance? I don't think so.
Addie: You said he was nice.
Blair: Yeah, but he's also unpredictable, and he's moody. Look, Mama, I can't take a chance, all right? I need the money so I can take care of my business and to take care of you.
Addie: You don't have to do this for me, Blair!
Blair: Mama, please, just don't worry about everything -- everything will be just fine. I will get Todd to marry me, I'll have the money, it'll take care of you, and everyone will be happy.
Addie: Except you.
Blair: What do you mean?
Addie: How can you be happy? You don't love this Todd, do you?

Blair has a pained expression on her face.

--end scene--

Blair: Okay, so I'm not in love with Todd. But I am fond of him.
Addie: You're in love with Cord. How can you marry someone else?
Blair: Mother, it doesn't matter how I feel about Cord or how Cord feels about me, because I will never have Cord, because he's still in love with Tina. But I can have Todd.
Addie: Will Todd make you happy?
Blair: Mama, I've given up on happiness. Todd can make me safe. It doesn't matter if I love Cord or not. I will be safe with Todd.
Addie: Marrying Asa made you rich, and you hated yourself.
Blair: That's because I hated Asa. But, Mama, I like -- I like Todd. And, well, he's tough on the outside, but on the inside, he's okay. In fact, Mama, we're actually a little alike that way, I guess.
Addie: Don't you think you ought to think about this just a little bit more?
Blair: Mother, there's no time. If I've already figured out who Todd really is, that means somebody else might figure it out soon, too! And then my plan will be a bust. I've got to get to him, get him to marry me before someone tells him that he's the Lord heir. So I've got to go. I've got to go, Mama.
Addie: Blair --
Blair: What?
Addie: How will you get Todd to marry you?
Blair: Trust me, Mama. I've just got to get to him first!

Blair turns and leaves.
