Todd Finds Blair Crying at the Melador Building

Blair, who had been waiting at the country club for a date with Cord, becomes frustrated when he fails to show up. She leaves the club and goes to find some peace and quiet at the Melador building construction site. Todd (who saw Blair leave the club and obviously upset) follows her to the building and finds her on one of the top floors, crying and standing on very close to the edge.

Todd: Don't jump.

Blair turns in surprise. She's not happy to see him.

Blair: What are you doing here?

Todd rushes over to her side.

Todd: Blair, you will go to any lengths to win this stupid Most Pathetic Award, won't you?

--end scene--

Todd: I know what you're thinking, all right? You're thinking if you jump, you're a shoo-in for the Most Pathetic Award. But remember, if you're dead you can't make your acceptance speech, right? No fun there.
Blair: (outraged) You think I'm -- I'm stupid enough to jump?
Todd: Desperate, maybe.
Blair: I'm never going to be that desperate again. I learned the hard way that nothing -- nothing and no one is worth that.
Todd: Look, I figured from the way that you shot out of the country club that Cord finally blew you off. Now, I'm not the kinda guy that's gonna say "I told you so," but...you're making it hard.
Blair: What? You come hunt me down, find me?
Todd: Yeah.
Blair: Todd, buzz off, all right?
Todd: No. We've got things to settle, Blair.
Blair: No, no, no. Things are settled between us!
Todd: I don't think so.

He raises his hand to her face and caresses it.

Todd continues to caress Blair's cheek and she finally pulls away.

Blair: Don't.
Todd: Look, I'm just wiping away your tears.
Blair: I'm not crying.
Todd: What, you just got wind in your eyes?
Blair: Look, we've got to stay away from each other, all right? Is that clear to you?
Todd: Look, if you're scared of Cord finding out that we fooled around -- I mean, so what? Big deal. Things couldn't get much worse between you than they already are.
Blair: You have no idea what is going on between Cord and me.
Todd: So what happened, Blair? Did he dump you for his family again? I told you, you don't fit in there.
Blair: I don't want to talk about it.
Todd: All right, fine. We'll just sit up here in the cold and I'll watch you cry -- oh, I'm sorry, watch the wind blow stuff in your eyes.

He sits down and looks around the construction site.

Todd: What are you doing in this dump anyway? What are they building here?
Blair: My future. That is what they are building here. Todd, I have got big plans -- big plans. And I can't let anything or anyone get in the way of that. And that includes you. Can that be clear enough for you?

--end scene--

Blair: You are sitting in the penthouse offices of my new company, Melador.
Todd: You're starting your own business?
Blair: Yes I am, and it is going to be big -- I mean big!
Todd: What could you possibly sell?
Blair: Well, I could sell beauty...jewelry, furs, cosmetics, whatever.
Todd: Where'd you get the catchy name?
Blair: Melador, well, it's an anagram. It's a tribute to the Cramer girls. First my mother Addie, and then my aunt Melinda, and Dorian: Mel-A-Dor.
Todd: Cute.
Blair: Thank you.
Todd: So where'd you get the bucks? It takes a lot of dough to start a big business, right?
Blair: Yeah, well, I already have an investor who bought a lease for these top two floors -- and his name's Cord Roberts.
Todd: Cord's backing you?
Blair: Yeah, why not? He believes in me and he wants to help my dreams come true.
Todd: All right, that's cool, whatever.
Blair: I've waited my whole life for two things: an opportunity like this, and for a man like Cord Roberts to come along, and I finally have a chance for both of them. And I'm not gonna -- I can't risk anything getting in the way of that. Todd, can't you understand that?
Todd: Sure. I just don't understand why I'm a risk.
Blair: Oh come on, do you know if Cord ever found out that I slept with you --

Todd jumps back to his feet, suddenly offended.

Todd: What, you think I just walk around town blabbing about that??
Blair: Well, I --
Todd: Look, you get married to Cord tomorrow, I'll be there throwing the rice. No reason he should ever know about this.
Blair: Okay. Can we just leave it at that, and we'll part company, okay?
Todd: No. Because we have fun together. And there aren't a lot of people that I can say that about. You may be the only friend I've got.

When he sees that Blair doesn't seem to be changing her mind, Todd drops the subject.

Todd: Fine.

He starts walking away, then turns around one last time.

Todd: Look, you call me if you get the itch to be bad again. I'm pretty good at being bad.
Blair: (smiling wistfully) And don't I know it. I'll keep that in mind.
Todd: You do that. Because it's like I told you, Blair. You're setting yourself up for a real big fall. You better take a good look, because it's a long, long way down.

He leaves the building, and Blair stays behind, continuing to walk around, lost in thought.
