T&B Sleep Together ("The Christmas Present")

Blair and Todd have arrived at Blair's penthouse (which was previously occupied by her aunt Dorian). Blair is giving Todd the grand tour, finishing off with an entrance into the master bedroom. Blair opens the door and turns the lightswitch on -- she and Todd are both carrying glasses of wine with them.

Blair: So, and this Mr. Manning is the room of rooms. You can say whatever you want about my aunt Dorian, but she has great taste -- in beds, and in views.

Blair gestures toward the windows, from which the entire city of Llanview can be seen. Todd watches her from the doorway.

Blair: So, take off your coat, and stay awhile.

Todd reluctantly walks into the room as Blair goes to pour herself a little more wine.

Todd: It's funny. When I was in prep school, I used to tell everybody that I was gonna live in a penthouse.

Todd ventures over to the window and peers out over the city of Llanview. Blair's back is turned to him, as she herself is lost in thought.

Todd: And I was gonna drive a black sports car that did zero to sixty in, like, six seconds. Here you are -- you got both of them.
Blair: Yeah. So what else did you dream about, Todd? (she sips her wine)
Todd: I wasn't much of a dreamer.
Blair: Come on, everybody has dreams -- lots of them.
Todd: My father used to say that dreamers were time-wasters, and that the only people that counted in life were the do-ers.
Blair: (chuckling) Well, oh, your daddy sure would've hated me, then.
Todd: Yep. Join the club. (he sips his wine)
Blair: Hm, when I was a little girl, that's all I ever did was dream.

Blair goes to lay down on the bed.

Blair: And I had nothing -- absolutely nothing. And I wanted everything -- cars, money, furs, jewelry, views -- you name it, I wanted it. But it wasn't until I got older and people started telling me how pretty I was that I was able to start getting what I wanted -- for awhile, anyway. (bitterly) I even married me a millionaire. But, of course, in doing so I threw away everything that really mattered. So I guess I really didn't end up with anything, did I? Oh well. (rising from the bed) No need to dig up those old memories. The past is the past.

Suddenly the phone starts to ring. It's Cord. Blair and Todd listen to the ringing, but neither of them makes a move to answer.

Todd: You going to get that?
Blair: I'm sick of dealing with the real world.

Todd downs the rest of his glass of wine.

Blair: My day is over. How about you?

The ringing finally stops (Cord has given up and hung the phone up). Todd walks over toward Blair.

Todd: Look, Blair, seems to me you got everything back. I mean, the penthouse and the car part, I mean. What else could you want?
Blair: Respect. I'm so sick of being on the outside all the time. Hoping someone will reach out, take care of me, make me feel safe, you know? Respect.
Todd: (nodding) I could go for a little bit of that myself.

Todd and Blair stare into one another's eyes. They move toward one another slightly, and Blair reaches a hand toward his face. Todd flinches and suddenly walks away, turning his back to her. Blair makes no movement to stop him. Todd stands, his back to Blair, for a moment. Then he quickly, finally, takes off his winter coat. Blair hears the coat fall to the floor, and they turn to face one another.

Todd: If you want me to stop, you just let me know.

Todd slowly walks back toward Blair. Blair goes to sit on the bed, never taking her eyes off of him.

Blair: (whispering) Merry Christmas.

Blair holds her hand out toward Todd, who takes it. He then leans down and kisses her gently. She moves her fingers over his lips, and he goes in to kiss her a second time, a third time...

When the scene returns, Todd is getting dressed and Blair is in a robe. She watches him as he dresses.

Blair: Todd, you really don't have to rush off.
Todd: I'm not. Relax -- I just dress fast. I'm not running.
Blair: Okay. So --
Todd: What?
Blair: Nothing, I'm sorry.
Todd: Look --
Blair: What?

Todd, obviously nervous, sits down in a chair directly in front of her.

Todd: Look, I'm just going to say this, all right? I -- maybe we, uh, had fun --
Blair: Sure, we had a -- we had a lot of fun, but it's --
Todd: Right. I mean, that's exactly what I was going to say. It's just one of those things --
Blair: Spur-of-the-moment.
Todd: Right, it just happened. And I don't see why we should make a big thing out of it.
Blair: Thank you.

Todd jumps up from his chair and goes to grab his winter coat.

Todd: All right, look, I got to get out of here before I get used to this penthouse thing, right?
Blair: You know, Todd, maybe you should heed some of your father's advice.
Todd: What, find out who I am?
Blair: No. The part about not dreaming all the time, but doing. Why don't you go out and get a job -- I mean, make a few million. Who knows, in a year or so you might have your own penthouse.
Todd: (scoffing) Yeah, right, that's not going to happen. Nice thought. Thanks.
Blair: Todd? Happy holidays.
Todd: Yeah, you too. Thanks for the Christmas present.

Todd turns to leave, but Blair calls him back.

Blair: Todd?

He turns around.

Blair: What are friends for?

Todd stares at her for a moment, then leaves the bedroom. Blair, lost in thought, holds her head in her hands.
