Blair Drops by Todd's Motel Room on Christmas Eve

Todd is alone in his motel room, puzzling over the key his father left him.

Todd: Thanks a lot, Dad. Next time, leave me something I can use -- like a toaster.

Todd looks at the key in the light, then throws it down onto the nightstand.

Suddenly, there's a knock at the door. Todd goes to answer it -- Blair is standing there, leaning up against the door frame.

Blair: You alone?
Todd: No, I got a bunch of people here, as usual.
Blair: How'd you like to have a real party -- for two?

Todd pours Blair a drink and she takes the glass.

Todd: So, this trip to Chicago was a total waste of time. Lawyer reads the will -- I'm not even in it. My dear old dad didn't even leave me a dime.
Blair: That's terrible.
Todd: Yeah, it's a bummer. And then there's this trust fund that my mother supposedly left for me.
Blair: Really? Well, how much is that worth?
Todd: Nothing, I guess. Doesn't seem to exist.
Blair: Oh, man. Seems like your dad was a jerk right up till the end.
Todd: Oh, yeah, well that's the weird part. I mean, right before he died -- I mean, I told you he gave me this key and he told me this crazy stuff about finding out who I was and I had no idea what he meant. But I had this feeling that maybe he kind of cared after all. Guess I was wrong. It's like I got this stupid t-shirt: "My Dad Died And All I Got Is This Stupid Key." (he picks the key up from the nightstand)
Blair: Wait, wait, come here -- let me see this key.

Todd hands the key to Blair and she studies it.

Blair: I don't know, Todd, this looks -- this looks like a safe-deposit key to me. I would check it out.
Todd: I did. The clown of a lawyer my dad had had no idea what this is a key for. So now I'm back here where I started -- broke. My life sucks. So hand over the Most Pathetic Award. Looks like I've earned it.
Blair: You at least got to leave this little town and go on a little holiday. I'm stuck here dealing with these self-righteous jerks who live in this God-forsaken town.
Todd: You giving me a little competition for the Most Pathetic Award?
Blair: I don't know about that. All I saw was Marty Saybrooke hugging Andrew Carpenter at her house where they had practically nothing on except their bathrobes.
Todd: (disgusted) Ugh!
Blair: So, I think, "Well, I will go over and go straight to Cassie and tell her," since she's my cousin, I need to warn her, right?
Todd: Yeah, I guess.
Blair: Well, you would think that she would thank me for telling her the truth about her lousy husband, but no! No, no, no, she reads me the riot act, can you believe that?
Todd: Yeah -- no, look, I can't believe that Marty was with that uptight little reverend!

Todd chuckles, amused. Blair just glares at him.

Todd: Oh, come on, Blair, lighten up. It's kind of funny if you think about it.
Blair: No, it's not funny. I tell her the truth and Cassie gets upset with -- everybody in this town gets upset with me!
Todd: Look, you want my advice? Screw 'em all.
Blair: Good advice. I don't care about anything or anyone in this town.

The radio in Todd's room is playing the Steve Perry song, "Somewhere There's Hope." Blair listens to the song for a moment and then walks over to Todd, who is sitting on the edge of the bed.

Blair: I want to dance.
Todd: With me?
Blair: (nodding) I'm a big girl. I know what I want. And I want to dance with you -- right here, right now. How about it, Todd?

Todd gets off the bed and walks over to her. She touches his hair gently as they stare into one another's eyes.

The song, "Somewhere There's Hope," is still playing. Todd and Blair circle one another and then tentatively reach their hands out for one another. They start to sway to the music, and Blair brushes Todd's hair away from his face with her fingers. He averts his eyes.

Blair: I don't feel like being alone tonight.
Todd: (turning his eyes back to her) Me either.
Blair: I was hoping you'd say that.

Todd and Blair stare at one another, and Blair leans her face forward to kiss him. Todd backs away, shy. She sees that he's scared, and brings her hand up to his face. He stares at her lips, then looks into her eyes as she kisses him. The kiss lasts only a moment, with Todd pulling away again slightly. Blair brings her hand back up to his face, and he suddenly leans forward and kisses her passionately. He pulls his face away again and they lace their fingers together. Another kiss, this one hungrier than the last.

--end scene--

Todd and Blair have moved to the bed. "Somewhere There's Hope" continues to play on the radio behind them. Todd is on top of Blair, kissing her. He pulls away and rakes his hand over his hair, nervously. Blair reaches up to caress his face. Todd grabs her wrist and goes back down on top of her, pinning her wrist to the headboard. They stare into one another's eyes, and then Todd roughly starts to kiss her. Blair struggles underneath him.

Blair: Todd, Todd --

Todd immediately pulls back and away from her.

Blair: Let's just -- sweetie, let's just slow down a little bit, all right? Just slow down.
Todd: I'm scaring you, aren't I? Aren't I? I'm scaring you! Why can't you just admit it -- I'm scaring you!

Blair looks at him and says nothing.

--end scene--

The song on the radio has changed -- now it's playing "I'll Stand By You" by The Pretenders. Todd and Blair are both still on the bed, but Todd has pulled away from Blair completely. She reaches out toward him as he nervously avoids meeting her gaze.

Blair: No, Todd -- Todd, look at me. (she tries to turn his face toward her) I am not afraid of you. I'll admit that I -- that I used to be. Every time I would run into you, I thought, "Well, you know, I'm lucky to get away alive."
Todd: That's funny. I mean -- I never saw that fear in you.
Blair: (reaching out to touch his hair) Why, because I acted tough?

Blair then gets off the bed and walks over toward the room's small table.

Blair: What can I say? We're alike -- steel on the outside, but on the inside --
Todd: Definitely not steel.
Blair: (chuckling) Yeah, that's us. Always moving too fast. So, you know, what's why I thought -- well, you know, we should just take our time, get to know each other a little better, you know?

At this, Todd gets off the bed and strides toward her, somewhat upset.

Todd: Come on. Look, the only reason that you're here with me is because you want to forget somebody else, which is fine, but let's keep everything out in the open here, okay?
Blair: Okay, okay.
Todd: (quietly) There are a lot of things about myself that I wouldn't mind forgetting.
Blair: All right, well, then let us make a pact, okay? There are no rules except one -- there are no rules. Except no love. No love, all right? No love.
Todd: No problem.
Blair: Good.

Blair goes to look at the partially empty bottle of alcohol on the table.

Blair: So, let me see -- oh man, you have anything else to drink in this dump?
Todd: No.
Blair: Then it looks like we're going to have to go to my place! (grabbing her jacket and keys) I will show you a view of Llanview that you are just gonna love!

Blair slips into her jacket and notices that Todd isn't saying anything in response.

Blair: What's the matter? What?

Todd reaches out and grabs the car keys from her.

Todd: I'll drive.
Blair: (upset) You gonna be macho? You have to be in control?

Todd seems somewhat surprised and amused that she doesn't seem to notice how incredibly nervous he is.

Todd: (quietly) I'm not in control. It's just that I'm the one that's sober.
Blair: What? I'm -- well, I could still drive us there!
Todd: Look, you don't exactly have the best record behind the wheel, Blair, so --
Blair: (smiling) What?
Todd: What's your place like?
Blair: You're gonna love it! And it is gonna love you!

Blair touches his hair again.

Blair: Promise you that. Let's go! Come on!

Todd follows Blair out the door.
