Blair Sits Vigil as Todd Gets a Blood Transfusion

Blair stands in the hospital corridor, watching anxiously through the window into Todd's room. Dr. Ben Price and a nurse are talking about the dire situation at hand: Todd has lost a lot of blood and the hospital does not have enough of his blood type for a transfusion. Blair enters the room and approaches Ben.

Blair: Excuse me, Dr. Price? I'm Blair Daimler. Is there something I can do for Todd?
Ben: Are you a friend of Todd's, Ms. Daimler?
Blair: Well, it looks like I'm his only friend right now. There must be something that I can do here.
Ben: Look, you can talk to him -- try and keep him awake and focused, okay? We stitched him up, but he's lost too much blood.
Blair: All right, I understand that.

Ben goes to take a phone call regarding the blood shortage and Todd's situation. Blair sits down at Todd's bedside.

Blair: Hey Todd...it's me, Blair. Hey, now don't you zone out on me now, all right?

Todd weakly turns his head to look at Blair.

Blair: Come on, Todd.
Todd: Blair?
Blair: Yeah!
Todd: What are you doing here?
Blair: (forced laughter) Well, you know me -- always up for a good time!

Todd starts to close his eyes and Blair panics.

Blair: Oh, no, no, no, come on, I'm not going to let you win this easily!
Todd: Win?
Blair: Yeah, the Most Pathetic Award. You're going to have to earn it this time, buddy.

Todd closes his eyes again, despite Blair's best efforts to keep him awake.

Blair: No! Come on, Todd, come on, come on, don't -- don't zone out on me, now, all right? Don't zone out.

Blair is back waiting in the hospital corridor while Ben checks on Todd. Ben comes out to see Blair, who anxiously asks for news on Todd.

Blair: So, how is he? Look, I did the best that I could to try to keep him awake --
Ben: I know, it's not your fault. Todd's just lost so much blood, he doesn't have the strength.
Blair: Well, you can do something about that, right? I mean, a transfusion or something like that.
Ben: Yes, but there's a problem there. Todd's blood type is O-negative.
Blair: Is that rare, or what?
Ben: Rare enough. It's a fluke, but right now the hospital has a critical shortage.
Blair: Try another hospital or something!
Ben: We're calling all over Philadelphia. The problem is we may not find it in time. I have to be honest with you, Ms. Daimler. If we don't find a donor fast, and Todd's heart starts to fail, he may not make it.

Blair looks through the window at Todd, sleeping in bed. She looks incredibly scared and lost.

At that moment, Marty and Dylan arrive at the hospital. They walk over to the nurse at the counter.

Marty: Hey Phyllis, they told me that Ben was on the floor tonight. Can you page him for me, please?
Phyllis: Uh, he's got his hands pretty full right now, Marty.
Marty: Oh -- sounds serious.
Phyllis: It is. We're calling every hospital in the valley to see if they have O-negative blood. Without it, we may lose a patient.
Dylan: I'd help if I could, but I'm the wrong type.
Marty: Well, put down the phone. I'm O-negative.

Phyllis and Dylan stare at Marty in shock.

Marty: I can't let someone die, can I?
Phyllis: Well hallelujah!

--end scene--

Phyllis: All right, Marty, everything checks out -- if you'll come with me.
Dylan: Wait a minute, what about her lupus?
Phyllis: No, this isn't a problem. Marty has a supply of frozen red blood cells. They're in storage, I just need her authorization.
Marty: All right, let's get going then, somebody's waiting for that good healthy blood.
Phyllis: (pressing the button for the elevator) You know, it's almost a miracle -- you being here like this. You may be the only chance this patient has.

At that moment, Blair comes rushing down the hallway toward Phyllis.

Blair: Nurse, is there any word on the donor? (catching sight of Marty) What are you doing here?
Phyllis: You should be grateful that she is. Marty's just volunteered to donate her blood to your friend.

Blair is shocked.

Blair: (to Marty) Is she serious?
Marty: I didn't realize this patient was a friend of yours, Blair.
Blair: You're going to give your blood to him?
Dylan: Hey, what's the big deal? If somebody needs the blood, somebody needs the blood, all right?
Blair: Well, you -- you don't know, do you?
Marty: What, Blair? Who is this friend of yours?
Blair: Todd Manning. Tonight he was stabbed by a man wearing a ski mask. If he doesn't have a transfusion, he could die.

The elevator door opens and Phyllis turns to Marty -- who has been struck dumb by Blair's announcement.

Phyllis: Okay, Marty, you ready?

--end scene--

Phyllis: Marty?
Dylan: One second, okay? (to Marty) Look, you did what you had to do. You told the truth and you got Todd out of jail. You don't have to give him your blood.
Marty: I was willing to give it to a stranger. I can't say no now that I know it's Todd.
Dylan: (quietly) Yeah, but he's the one who --
Marty: I know, I know what he did to me, but that's not what this is about, okay? (to Phyllis) Phyllis, let's go sign those forms.
Dylan: I'm going with you, okay?

Dylan and Marty get into the elevator with Phyllis. Marty stares at Blair as the elevator door closes. Once it has, Blair claps her hands happily and rushes off to Todd's room.

--end scene--

In Todd's hospital room, a nurse tries to wake him up.

Nurse: Mr. Manning, can you hear me? Mr. Manning?

The nurse leaves and Blair comes in and leans over Todd's bed-side.

Blair: Hey, Todd. It's Blair. Look, buddy, I need you to stay awake now all right? You know that -- you know that I would never lie to you...besides, you would see right through me, anyway. So one monster to another -- you're going to be all right! Trust me, help is on its way.

--end scene--

Blair sits at Todd's bedside as he stirs and mumbles out-loud to her.

Todd: I'm going to get him, Blair.
Blair: Shh, Todd.
Todd: He's the rapist.
Blair: Just lie still.
Todd: He's gotta be. That's why he tried to kill me.
Blair: Come on --
Todd: He knows I'm getting closer.
Blair: You are going to get your chance to get back at him once you're strong and on your feet again, all right? You're getting a blood transfusion right now. We found a donor!
Todd: For me?
Blair: Mm-hmm!
Todd: Who would be stupid enough to do that? Oh, I get it. They didn't tell them it was for Todd Manning, right?
Blair: Wrong. She knew.

Blair turns and looks out the window to the hallway, where Marty is watching them. Todd also sees Marty and realizes that she is the donor.
